Shalom u'Vrachah!
I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter and pan from Monday—and at an auspicious time I will mention you at the resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, zatzal.
In response to your notification about your birthday: certainly you will follow the custom of Anash in recent times regarding birthdays. May it be G‑d's will that this year be one of success for you both materially and spiritually, and that you increase in Torah study and mitzvah observance with abundance.
Blessings for expanded livelihood very soon…
a) Regarding what you wrote in your commentary on Avos (5:22), that by Avraham it says "u'shnei ne'arav imo" (and his two lads were with him) and by Bilam—"ito" (with him), but in the Sifrei Torah and Chumashim it is reversed. It can be explained according to the version in Tanchuma (Vayeira, and at the beginning of Emor), Vayikra Rabbah ch. 26:7. Our version in Sifrei Torah and Chumashim is confirmed by Minchas Shai to Balak (22:22).
b) In your question about what is taught by the negative commandment according to the Arizal (Bamidbar 16:14) regarding "teyudim": according to the simple meaning—'hei' of 'ha'einei'—is a definite hei, which cannot be otherwise (unlike if it could have been possible etc.). But some explain it refers to a call or proclamation: even if [you would take out] our eyes etc.—and this is the commonality between Rashi's explanation and that of the Arizal. According to the first explanation—in the translations (since they did not clarify or add the word "even"), Rashbam, Baal HaTurim, etc. Ibn Ezra brings both explanations.
Part of this was printed in Likkutei Sichos vol. 7 p. 370; part in vol. 4 p. 1320; completed based on a copy from the secretariat.
Summary
The Rebbe encourages celebrating birthdays with Chassidic customs as a source of blessing for material and spiritual growth, while also providing thoughtful answers to questions on Torah verses—demonstrating care for both personal milestones and deep learning.
