במענה על מכתבו מח"י תמוז.
א) במה ששואל אם ישנה נוסח התפלה לנוסח אר"י רבנו הזקן, נכון הדבר במאד ובלבד אם יחליט בזה בתוקף, כי ע"פ המבואר בשו"ת האחרונים*, יש לשנות מנוסח אשכנז לספרד ולא להיפך, ועד"ז הוא ג"כ בנוסח ספרד עצמו לנוסח אריז"ל רבנו הזקן.
וביחוד שהזמן גרמא, כיון שבחמישי למנחם הוא יום ההילולא של האריז"ל, וכפי כתבו - יום ההולדת שלו.
ידוע מרז"ל, אל תשנו מנהג אבותיכם נוחי נפש, אבל כבר האריכו בזה בשו"ת הנ"ל.
ובפרט שמעשה רב מימות רבנו הזקן (בעל התניא - פוסק בנסתר
שבתורה - והשו"ע - פוסק בנגלה דתורה), שרובא דרובא מאלו שנקטו בנוסח האריז"ל מדויק ע"פ רבנו הזקן - הי' עליהם לשנות ממנהגם הקודם, כמובן.
ב) במ"ש אודות לימודין. - בכל עת ובכל זמן, ועאכו"כ עתה, מוכרח לימוד קבוע בהלכות הצריכות בחיי היום יומים בשבתות ומועדים וכו' כי סו"ס - לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה, וכבר נאמר, את האלקים ירא (שצ"ל לימוד המביא לידי יראה) ואת מצותיו שמור - כי זה כל האדם, כן מוכרח לימוד דלמיגרס, בכדי שתהי' עכ"פ ידיעה שטחית בעניני תורתנו לרוב. וכבר אמרו רז"ל ליגמר אינש והדר ליסבר, וסדר זה נוגע גם בהלימוד דליסבר, כמובן ממרז"ל בזה (ע"ז יט, א).
והאמור בענין למיגרס הוא בהנוגע לנגלה דתורה וגם לתורת החסידות, שבשניהם צריך להיות הלימוד לעיונא, אבל בהכרח תמיד כל הזמן גם הלימוד למיגרס, ועיין הדיק היטב בהלכות ת"ת לרבנו הזקן פ"ב.
ג) ולהודעתו מיום הולדתו, שבטח ינהג במנהג אנ"ש ביום זה בתקופה האחרונה, הנה יה"ר שתהי' שנת הצלחה אצלו בלימוד התורה ביר"ש וקיום מצותי' בהידור ובהפצת המעינות היא תורת החסידות בחוגים רחבים ככל האפשרי. וזכות הרבים תלוי בו.

In response to your letter from the 18th of Tammuz.
a) Regarding your question about changing your prayer text to Nusach Ari as established by the Alter Rebbe: this is very proper, provided you make a firm decision about it. As explained in the responsa of later authorities*, one may change from Nusach Ashkenaz to Sefard but not the reverse, and similarly within Nusach Sefard itself to Nusach Arizal of the Alter Rebbe. Especially now, as it is timely—the fifth of Menachem Av is the yahrzeit of the Arizal, and as you wrote, his birthday. Our sages said: "Do not change the customs of your righteous ancestors," but this has been discussed at length in those responsa. In particular, since from the time of the Alter Rebbe (author of Tanya—decisor in esoteric Torah—and Shulchan Aruch—decisor in revealed Torah), most who adopted Nusach Arizal as precisely established by the Alter Rebbe had to change from their previous custom, obviously.
b) Regarding what you wrote about studies: at all times and especially now, one must have fixed study in practical halachos needed for daily life on Shabbos and festivals etc., because ultimately "the main thing is not study but action," and it is already stated: "Fear G‑d" (meaning study that leads to awe) "and keep His commandments—for this is all of man." Likewise, there must be study for memorization so that at least there will be superficial knowledge in many areas of our Torah. Our sages said: "Let a person first learn and then understand," and this order also applies to analytical study, as is clear from their words (Avodah Zarah 19a). What was said about memorization applies both to Nigleh (revealed Torah) and Chassidus; both require analytical learning, but constant memorization is always necessary. c) Regarding your notification about your birthday—I am sure you will follow Chabad customs on this day as practiced recently. May it be G‑d's will that this year be one of success for you in Torah study with awe of Heaven and observance of mitzvos with hiddur (beauty), and spreading the wellsprings—that is Chassidus—in ever-wider circles as much as possible. The merit of many depends on you.
