בשעתו קבלתי מכתבו שכותב ע"ד השם המתאים להתאחדות שני הבתי כנסיות, ולפי בקשתו לזרז במענה, מסרתי חוות דעתי בטעלעפאן בזה, וכבקשתו באתי בזה גם במכתב, והוא:
אשר אף שענין השם תופס מקום חשוב בתורה ובמנהגי ישראל, שמזה מובן שגם בהנוגע לשמות בתכ"נ - צריך לדייק בזה, בכל זה מובן שעוד יותר נוגע נוסח התפלה שמתפללים בו בבית הכנסת,
והנה האריכו בכמה שו"ת האחרונים בהנוגע לשינוי הנוסח, ומסקנא האחרונה היא, שאפשר לשנות מנוסח אשכנז לנוסח ספרד, אבל לא מנוסח ספרד לאשכנז. ומזה מובן ג"כ, עד כמה נוגע שיהי' דוקא נוסח אר"י שהוא עוד בדיוק נוסף בנוסח ספרד עצמו.
ובפרט נוסח רבנו הזקן שהוא הנקרא עתה נוסח האריז"ל, שרבנו הזקן בירר מכמה נוסחאות - ועל פי המסופר בן זקני החסידים בדורות שעברו, שבעת שקבע וכתב הסידור שלו, ביררו מששים סידורים נוסחאות שונות. ולכן לדעתי גם בשם שני בתי כנסיות המאוחדות צ"ל התיבה נוסח האריז"ל - בכדי לקבוע העיקר, שהוא נוסח התפלה כנ"ל.
ויה"ר שיצליחו לקבוע בכל המתפללים - שהתפלה תפעול פעולתה בכל שעות היום.
וכוונתי כפשוטה, שהברכה הראשונה בבקשת צרכיו שהיא בקשת הבנה ודעת, יעמדו בהשתוקקות זו גם באמצע היום, והברכה שלאחרי' - בקשה להתעוררות תשובה ולסליחה על עוונות, תעמוד בקשה זו להתעוררות תשובה גם בעת העסקים כו' וכו'.
ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.

At the time I received your letter in which you wrote about the appropriate name for the unification of two synagogues, and at your request to expedite my response, I conveyed my opinion by telephone on this matter. As you requested, I am also writing it here: Even though the matter of a name holds important weight in Torah and Jewish custom—which means that also with regard to synagogue names one must be precise—nevertheless, it is understood that even more important is the prayer rite (nusach) used in the synagogue.
Many later halachic authorities have discussed at length changing nusach, and their final conclusion is that one may change from Nusach Ashkenaz to Nusach Sefard, but not from Sefard to Ashkenaz. From this it is also clear how significant it is that specifically Nusach HaAri be used, which is an even more precise version within Nusach Sefard itself.
Especially regarding the nusach of our Rebbe the Alter Rebbe—now called Nusach HaArizal—for he clarified it from among many versions. It is told by elder chassidim of previous generations that when he established and wrote his siddur, he selected from sixty different siddurim with various nuschaot.
Therefore, in my opinion, even in the name of the two united synagogues there should be included "Nusach HaArizal," in order to establish what is primary—that is, the nusach of prayer as mentioned above.
May it be G‑d's will that you succeed in establishing among all those who pray there that prayer will have its effect throughout all hours of the day. My intention is literal: That the first blessing asking for one's needs—which requests understanding and knowledge—should remain with this yearning even during midday; and that the following blessing—a request for awakening teshuvah and forgiveness for sins—should remain as a request for awakening teshuvah even during business dealings and so forth. There is nothing that stands before willpower.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that while naming a synagogue has significance in Torah tradition, ensuring prayers are conducted according to Nusach HaAri—as clarified by the Alter Rebbe—is even more essential. This choice influences spiritual impact throughout daily life.
