Moving Requires Three Conditions: Spousal Consent, Children's Education, and Support

The Rebbe writes that while moving is generally a good idea, in this case three conditions are not met: full spousal consent, no harm to children's education, and nearby support. He advises not to let negative thoughts deter one's holy work and to serve with joy.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

...I received your letter from the 19th of MarCheshvan. Regarding what you wrote about considering moving to live in..., indeed, in itself, it is a very correct idea. However, in your specific case: (a) A new residence must have the full consent of your wife without any coercion. (b) It must not negatively affect the quality of the children's education. (c) Since you are away from home for several hours each day and your wife must remain at home, there must be relatives or friends living nearby. It seems that regarding you—all these conditions do not exist.

It is worthwhile for you to compare your letters from... and you will clearly see how much your statements are unfounded and result in a lowering of spirit and certainly also a lack of vitality in holy work. From this you should learn for the future that if the yetzer hara comes again to frighten you about how you will fulfill your obligations etc., do not pay attention even to his best arguments, and instead utilize your time and energy in holy work—bringing Jewish hearts closer to our Father in Heaven—and specifically with joy. As above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that before making major life changes like moving, one must ensure spousal agreement, maintain children's education standards, and have local support. He encourages focusing on positive action in holy work with joy rather than being discouraged by doubts or negative thoughts.
