Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 10th of the month of mercy in which you ask: a) About the special modes of service for these days. It is understood that service in general—and teshuvah in particular—depends on each person's nature and character; it is not possible to set fixed rules. In general, you should try to meet several times with the mashpi'im of Chassidus in Eretz HaKodesh, who will guide you based on their experience with hundreds of students and Avreichim, in addition to the tradition they received from their own mashpi'im. Chassidic texts especially suited for this time include the sefer Derech HaChayim by the Mitteler Rebbe. As stated by Rabbeinu HaZaken in his introduction to Tanya: reading and seeing in books is not comparable to hearing face-to-face, since not every mind is aroused by what inspires another's mind—see there. And as our Sages said: "Acquire for yourself a friend."

b) Regarding your mention about immersion in the mikveh—and quoting someone who said that going regularly to the mikveh has no merit because it becomes routine—this is contrary to halachah and likely also a mistake regarding an explicit Mishnah (see Chagigah 18b; Chullin 31a; Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah end of siman 198). Of course it is a greater merit when done with intention—as stated in Siddur Derech Kavanat HaMikveh: "It is not sufficient to perform immersion itself without spiritual intent," see there.

c) Regarding your question about immersing in the mikveh before prayer—see Siddur there. This can also be explained according to Nigleh (revealed Torah), based on the words of the Rashba as brought by Magen Avraham at the start of siman 4: When a person rises in the morning he is like a Kohen preparing for service—and one does not enter service without first immersing. This too is an explicit Mishnah (Yoma 30a). Although this was not established as an obligation—just as they did not establish Ezra's immersion as obligatory because the community could not endure it. See Rambam Hilchos Tefillah ch.4; also see Likkutei Torah by Rabbeinu HaZaken Parshas Tavo end of folio 43a.

d) Regarding what you wrote about farbrengen—that drinking itself is not its purpose—this is obvious. The purpose of farbrengen is to awaken Torah and mitzvos with vitality, joy, and even bitterness together; but we see tangibly what our Sages said: "Great is drinking for it brings people together" (though caution is needed here). It follows logically: if our Sages decreed stringency regarding their wine lest one ultimately accept his faith (Shabbos 17b), how much more so for good measure—that through this we serve one G‑d together with love and awe and knowledge of Hashem—all achieved specifically through learning Pnimiyus HaTorah. As hinted in Rambam Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah ch.2: "How does one come to love and fear Him?" etc.; also see Chovos HaLevavos Shaar HaYichud; and as Rabbeinu HaZaken writes in Tanya Kuntrus Acharon p.156b: Knowledge of existence through hishtalshelus (the chain-like descent) is also a lofty mitzvah—even surpassing all others—as it says "And you shall know today... Know the G‑d of your father..." which brings one to a complete heart—which is primary.

May it be His will that you contemplate all the above properly—and most importantly that these matters affect practical action: learning Chassidus and following its guidance and customs.

Blessings for good news regarding all above matters and for being inscribed and sealed for good.

In the name of my revered teacher shlita—the Rebbe—I mention that some friends from your yeshivah are asking about these topics as well—and if you convey this content appropriately they too will not struggle with these same issues.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that during Elul one should seek personalized guidance from mashpi'im, maintain practices like mikveh even if habitual, use farbrengens for spiritual inspiration—not just socializing—and focus on learning Chassidus as key preparation for growth.
