Following Doctor's Orders as Torah's Agents for Healing

ב"ה, י"א אלול, תשט"ו ברוקלין.
The Rebbe writes that one must follow the doctor's instructions, as doctors act as agents of the Torah to heal. He discourages unnecessary fasts and suggests replacing them with refraining from idle talk, which weakens the evil inclination without harming health.

Blessings and greetings!

I was pleased to receive your letter from 8 Elul stating that you are feeling much better. May it be G‑d's will that it should be completely good, and not only should the doctor think so but you yourself should feel this way as well.

It is self-understood that one must take the vitamins, and if the doctor also prescribes a regimen for eating and drinking, this too must be followed. For the body of a Jew is sacred, and since the Torah says 'u'Rafa Yerape' ("and he shall surely heal"), the doctor is an agent of the Torah in this matter.

Regarding what you wrote about fasting: I have not heard of such a practice (except in exceptional cases). [Of course, aside from those fasts mandated by Shulchan Aruch and also when the doctor says there is no danger.] It is better to substitute fasting by refraining from other things one desires, such as speaking idle words or even more so lashon hara and similar things. This tires out the yetzer hara more than fasting and does not affect a person's health; thus one has more strength to perform mitzvos and especially charity and kindness. May Hashem help you to share good news in this area as well.

With blessings for a good inscription and sealing.

In the name of the Rebbe shlita.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that following medical advice is a Torah obligation since doctors are agents of healing according to Torah law. He encourages substituting unnecessary fasts with positive spiritual practices that do not harm one's health.
