Shalom u'Vrachah!
After your long silence, your letter from the 22nd of Menachem Av was received, along with its enclosure. I was pleased that Divine Providence arranged for you an opportunity to spread the wellsprings at a certain yeshivah, as well as among certain types of students. It is clearly evident that this is an awakening from Above regarding both the students and the yeshivah, and also concerning yourself. Therefore, it is understood how necessary it is to exert oneself greatly in this matter. For although on one hand an awakening from Above can—Heaven forbid—be without results, on the other hand when it is drawn down below it comes from a place even higher than an awakening from below. Obviously then, from the side of the opposite of complete joy, it appears that your effort in this matter is extremely weak. Yet certainly with even a small amount of your involvement there would have been clear sustenance both spiritually and materially—in whatever way you might have tried, even if there was only a doubt or even a remote possibility. From this one should learn all the more so how much effort should be invested in this matter.
I have already written to several of Anash that we have merited such a time when many are being clarified and refined and tested. Therefore, together with the difficulty of these trials—especially regarding matters of Anash in Eretz HaKodesh—I am assured that they will see with their own eyes material sustenance if they properly engage in spiritual livelihood. Unfortunately, I have not yet merited that my words be accepted. I have already written to some of Anash in Eretz HaKodesh that their situation is like what is brought in Tanya at the end of chapter 40: someone stands by a river and cries out for water to drink but does not wish to lower his head to the water in the river—the source of living waters—even though by doing so he would also receive water and bread; meaning literal material sustenance.
With blessings for success in all the above and for a good inscription and sealing.
Summary
When we dedicate ourselves to spiritual endeavors—especially spreading Chassidus—we draw down blessings for both spiritual and material sustenance. The Rebbe teaches that sincere effort in spiritual matters leads to tangible physical results.
