Overcoming Feelings of Inferiority and Rekindling Success in Torah Study

The Rebbe writes that feelings of inferiority and doubts about success in Torah study are baseless and should be dismissed. He advises seeking guidance from a Rosh Yeshiva, mentoring younger students, and maintaining daily study and charity to ensure spiritual growth.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter—without a date—where you write that you once studied in yeshiva and succeeded in your studies, but afterwards, in your opinion, your success left you; you cannot connect to your learning, etc., and therefore you feel inferior and doubt whether you will succeed in your studies, and you ask my opinion on this.

If you will listen to me, you should banish these feelings and thoughts entirely—not only from your heart but even from your surroundings—and continue learning our Torah, the Torah of life. You should ask the Rosh Yeshiva of the class appropriate for you to arrange your studies for at least the initial period in a subject that interests you. These concerns have no basis; they are temptations of the yetzer hara.

However, since every matter and every person needs help from Heaven, and since the measure of the Holy One is measure for measure, it is best that you become a mentor to a group of boys—obviously younger than yourself—and during your free time from your own studies, learn with them or better yet converse with them about the weekly parsha, practical halachos for boys their age, and guide them in Jewish customs appropriate for them. Since I am certain you will succeed in this as well, this will be further proof that these concerns have no basis at all; you will rise higher in learning and succeed.

Certainly from now on you will keep the three daily study portions established by my revered father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal—Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya—as is well known. Also set aside two or three coins for tzedakah each weekday before davening (all this should be without a vow).

Blessings for good news in all the above promptly.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that doubts about one’s abilities are unfounded obstacles from the yetzer hara. By seeking guidance, helping others grow spiritually, maintaining daily study routines, and giving tzedakah consistently, one can overcome feelings of inferiority and achieve true success.
