Shalom u'Vrachah!
After a long silence, I was pleased to receive your letter from Parshas Beha'aloscha, although you should have been more joyful, because you only complain that according to your calculations your material debts have increased by a few hundred dollars. From this I gather that your health and similar matters are in order. If so, since this is nothing more than a temporary matter for only a short time and it is only a question of a few hundred dollars, it is not worth it to be unhappy—especially since you had the joy of your daughter and her husband celebrating the Pidyon HaBen of their son, may he live and be well.
On the other hand, I am not so surprised that you think so much about this debt of a few hundred dollars. The reason for this is that you do not often attend chassidic gatherings (hisvaaduyos), which refresh the nefesh Elokis (G‑dly soul) and help a person rise above daily life. Even if the visible effect of the hisvaadus is only for a short while, internally one feels it for much longer, as can be seen on various occasions.
Regarding the actual matter of the debt: there is advice from our Sages—melach mamon chaser (salt preserves money by diminishing it)—that when one feels a lack in money, one should begin giving more tzedakah (charity), which helps bring an increase in livelihood. As Hashem has promised: aser bishvil shetitasher (tithe so that you may become wealthy). It does not always have to be that one asks Hashem to believe and then give an increase in livelihood and afterward be tested; rather, one can do it the other way—begin giving more tzedakah first and be certain that Hashem will fulfill His promise. May Hashem grant you success to give full tzedakah with a joyful heart, and also make sure to say Tehillim every day—the daily portion as divided among the days of the month—after davening and participate in public Torah study sessions. This will hasten good news in all the above.
Summary
Temporary financial stress should not overshadow joy or gratitude for blessings. Increasing charity and joining uplifting gatherings strengthens faith and brings G‑d's blessings for sustenance and happiness.
