במענה על מכתבו מב' תרומה, ולפלא על לשונו שכותב שהחליטו שלא לקבלו על משרה והסיבה העיקרית שיש לו זקן.
ומובן שאי אפשר שהדבר כן הוא, כי הרי הקב"ה הוא רבונו של עולם כפשוטו היינו שגם ארצות הברית בכלל זה, וכיון שגילה דעתו בתורתו הק' תורת עולם ותורת חיים אשר הזקן הם י"ג תקוני דיקנא מכילין דרחמי שמשפיעים כל הענינים, ונוסף על הטבע (עיין בפירוש המלות להצמח צדק עה"פ והוא רחום ונדפס ג"כ בהוספה לתהלים אהל יוסף יצחק השלם) הרי אי אפשר שתוספת הברכה תהי' סיבה למניעת הפרנסה ח"ו.
אלא שאין אתנו יודע עד מה מפני מה אין משרה מתאמת לפניו ולא לפני ב"ב שיחיו, ובאמת אין נפק"מ בידיעה זו, אלא שכיון שהקב"ה המשגיח עליהם בהשגחה פרטית סיבב הסיבות שלא יבוא לגור שם, בודאי שאין זה מתאים בשבילם כלל וכלל. והשי"ת יזכהו ויצליחו שיראה את הטוב הנראה והנגלה בלי העלמות והסתרים ונתינת מקום לפיתויי הלעו"ז.

In response to your letter from the second of Terumah, I am surprised by your wording where you write that it was decided not to accept you for a position and that the main reason is your beard. It is clear that this cannot be so, for the Holy One, blessed be He, is truly the Master of the world—including the United States. Since He has revealed His will in His holy Torah, which is an eternal Torah and a Torah of life, that the beard represents the thirteen attributes of mercy (Yud-Gimel Tikunei Dikna), which draw down all matters—including beyond nature (see Tzemach Tzedek’s commentary on "VeHu Rachum," also printed in the appendix to Tehillim Ohel Yosef Yitzchak Hashalem)—it is impossible that an increase in blessing should be a cause for withholding livelihood, G‑d forbid.
Rather, we do not know why a suitable position has not been found for you or your family. In truth, this knowledge makes no difference; since G‑d watches over you with individual Divine Providence and orchestrates all causes so you would not come to live there, it is certain that such a place is not at all appropriate for you.
May Hashem grant you merit and success so that you will see open and revealed good without concealment or obstacles and without giving room to temptations from outside influences.
