Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 3rd of Teves in which you write that you are learning in a yeshiva where there is no mashgiach to guide the bochurim, and you yourself wander without any purpose and lack motivation in Torah study, etc., etc.
It is well known from our Sages that the yetzer hara is a great expert in his craft, and therefore approaches each person in various different ways. One of his main tactics is the feeling of despair: "there is no motivation, no consistency, no clear path, etc., etc., so it’s not worth making an effort in this most difficult matter or perhaps it’s even impossible." As our Sages say: "I created the yetzer hara; I created Torah as its antidote." In our holy Torah—the Torah of life—even in this physical and material world all these tricks and schemes have been revealed so that a person will know their source and who is making these claims. In truth, none of these have any foundation because Hashem does not make unreasonable demands on His creations. Each person has been given the strength to overcome his yetzer (since Hashem helps him) and also to overcome his environment. If he only wants and tries, then as our Sages say he can reach actions like those of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov. Especially for an Avrech who is in Jerusalem, the holy city—may it be rebuilt—and within the tent of Torah, it is clear that everything depends only on his will. If there are no supervisors then on the contrary—this should awaken inner strengths so that he supervises himself. Knowing that self-love covers all faults, he should not act according to his nature or habit.
However, for everything one needs help from Heaven—especially in our generation at the footsteps of Mashiach when darkness is doubled and redoubled—therefore it is essential to learn the inner dimension of Torah every day. This is called Ilana DeChayei (the Tree of Life) in Zohar III p.124b (explained at length in Iggeres HaKodesh by Rabbeinu HaZaken ch.26), where there is no grasp for the sitra achra or its opposite. Likewise regarding matters connected with prayer—not just praying with purity but also giving charity before prayer and contemplating before prayer on concepts learned in Chassidus—and reciting a daily portion of Tehillim as divided by days of the month—afterwards.
Then the beginning and main part of prayer—the blessing "Who grants man knowledge"—will be fulfilled; when there is knowledge there is separation between light and darkness etc.
May Hashem grant you that—in addition to the three daily study portions established by my revered father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal (in Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya)—you will set a regular time for studying Chassidus. From this Tree of Life will flow additional vitality into your study of revealed Torah and enhanced observance of mitzvos in daily life.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that feelings of despair or lack of motivation are tactics of the yetzer hara. By taking responsibility for oneself through daily study—especially Chassidus—and practical steps like charity before prayer, one can awaken inner strength and renewed enthusiasm for Torah learning.
