ימים אלו נסע מכאן הרה"ח כו' מוה"ר נחמן שי' עלבוים, חתנו של הסוחר אתרוגים הידוע מוה"ר דוב לודמיר שי', ובידו הצעה לקחת גרעינים וגם שתילים ויחורים של אילני אתרוג קלברה ולנטעם ולשתלם באה"ק ת"ו בכפר חב"ד. ולדעתי נכון הדבר, כי אף שיש מקום לומר שהדיוק דאתרוגי קלברה בין אנ"ש, ומקורם מאדמו"ר הזקן - הוא לא רק מחשש מורכבים כמבואר בשו"ת חת"ס הובא בשער הכולל, אלא עוד זאת שרוצים שיהיו ממשמני הארץ, אשר מבואר במד"ר אשר משמני הארץ זוהי איטליא של יון, שהוא חצי האי קלברה.
(ויש לבאר הכרח דרשת רז"ל בזה, דהרי לכאורה קשה. לאחר שברך יצחק את יעקב מטל השמים ומשמני הארץ. איך יכול הי' לתת אח"כ לעשו ענין זה עצמו. ועיין בזה במפרשי החומש ובתורה אור. וע"פ המבואר, אשר חצי אי זה לא הי' בעולם בזמן ברכת יצחק ובא רק לכשנשא שלמה את בת פרעה וכמבואר בשבת דף נ"ו ע"ב[2]. הרי מבואר הנ"ל),
בכ"ז אף שלא תהי' מעלה האחרונה באתרוגי קלברה הגדלים באה"ק ת"ו, עכ"פ תהי' מעלה דחזקת אי מורכבים. וכיון שהרב עלבוים נוגע בדבר. ולאידך גיסא אינני יודע הדרכים באיטליא, דברתי עמו שיתקשר עם כת"ר באופן שכת"ר יוכל לתת לו מכתב עדות ומעין הכשר על הגרעינים יחורים ושתילים שיקח אתו. - מובן שיסלק שכר טרחתו. וכמו שאמרתי לו בפירוש - להרב עלבוים - שעליו להתדבר עם כת"ר גם בזה.

עוד זאת באתי במכתבי זה לזרז למזורזין אשר כיון שמצב ישיבת תו"ת בצרפת דחוק, ושלחו שד"ר לאיטליא. ובודאי גם למילאן, הרי בודאי שיעזור לו בכל יכולתו באופן המתאים ולהרבות ההצלחה בשליחות זו...

In these days, Haraha"ch etc. Reb Nachman Alboim, the son-in-law of the well-known etrog merchant Reb Dov Ludmir, traveled from here. He carries a proposal to take seeds as well as saplings and cuttings of Calabrian etrog trees to plant and cultivate them in Eretz HaKodesh at Kfar Chabad. In my opinion this is proper, because even though one could say that the emphasis on Calabrian etrogim among Anash and their source from the Alter Rebbe is not only due to concerns about grafting (as explained in Shut Chatam Sofer cited in Shaar HaKolel), but also because they want them to be from "the fat of the land," as explained in Midrash Rabbah that "from the fat of the land" refers to Italy of Greece, which is the Calabrian peninsula. (It is necessary to explain why our Sages interpreted it this way; for it seems difficult: after Yitzchak blessed Yaakov with "from the dew of heaven and from the fat of the land," how could he then give Esav this same thing? See commentaries on Chumash and Torah Or. And based on what is explained—that this peninsula did not exist at the time of Yitzchak's blessing but only came into being when Shlomo married Pharaoh's daughter as explained in Shabbat 56b—this is clarified.) Nevertheless, even if this last advantage will not apply to Calabrian etrogim grown in Eretz HaKodesh, at least there will be the advantage of a strong presumption that they are not grafted.
Since Rabbi Alboim has a vested interest in this matter—and on the other hand I do not know the ways of Italy—I told him to contact your honor so you can provide him with a letter of testimony or a form of certification regarding the seeds, cuttings, and saplings he will take with him. Of course he will pay you for your efforts. As I told Rabbi Alboim explicitly—he should also discuss this matter with you. I await good news.
Additionally, I am writing in this letter to urge those who are already diligent: since the situation at Tzivot Torah yeshiva in France is strained and they have sent a shadar (emissary) to Italy—and certainly also to Milan—you should surely help him with all your ability in an appropriate manner and increase his success in this mission...
