Blessings and greetings!
I acknowledge receipt of your letter—without indication of when it was written—and as you requested, I am replying without waiting for its turn, even before the urgent letters, and following the order of your letter.
It is astonishing that you begin by saying the last spark has faded, etc., for how could a person know such things? Apparently, this is all based on age, but this is no proof at all. As explained in the words of our Sages and seen clearly in reality, women older than you give birth to sons and daughters. Moreover, one who observes the world of the Holy One Blessed be He sees—as the verse says—Rabu Maasecha Hashem Gadlu Maasecha Hashem ("How manifold are Your works, Hashem; how great are Your works, Hashem")—that it is impossible for any one person to encompass or grasp all matters, not even an important part of them or even most of what exists within his own four cubits and pertains to his personal life. Therefore people are divided into experts in different fields; a straightforward person only gives a definite opinion in his own field and relies on experts in other areas.
Regarding our case: although Torah takes doctors' opinions into account—and special rulings in Shulchan Aruch depend on their opinions—and everyone should follow doctors' instructions regarding practical action, nevertheless one must also know clearly in his heart that Hashem is the healer of all flesh and runs His world literally—in the daily lives of each individual and especially in every detail—and certainly so with fundamental matters.
It seems from your letter that there was no expert doctor's opinion about this matter; but even if there was such a case with someone else, there are countless cases where doctors have erred in such matters. Ultimately it depends only on the strength of a person's trust and his connection with the Creator (through daily living with trust which naturally brings joy—and also joy from being able to do something for one's surroundings whose merit cannot be measured. As known from the Baal Shem Tov's saying: a soul descends into this world for seventy years just to do one favor for another Jew physically or spiritually. And who like the Baal Shem Tov understood how great a descent it is for a soul from such heights to come down into this world? Yet he said this and passed it on to generations after him—the generations of exile which grows ever stronger—especially when speaking about a young woman who has not yet fully utilized her abilities to positively influence her surroundings by awakening their inner good and strengthening it through good—which means Torah and mitzvah—not only on Shabbat or special days but specifically and precisely in daily life which some mistakenly call gray days).
In truth there is no need for lengthy explanation about such a simple point; one thought suffices: every Jew—descendant of Avraham Yitzchak and Yaakov—is part of what connects Creator and creation through his life as it is, especially through these actions. This connection is the purpose of all creation.
Certainly it goes without saying that my intent above does not diminish at all G‑d forbid the matter of having children; I only wish to point out absolute truth: there is no place for sadness—certainly not for expressions like despair—on the contrary!
Regarding your question about moving homes or mainly taking a child into your home to raise: this depends on how it will affect you and your husband. If it will increase joy or strengthen trust in Hashem Who will fulfill your wishes for good with healthy offspring—it is certainly proper. I believe I have already written you once based on one of my father-in-law's talks: although self-accounting is necessary, it must be done only at special times because otherwise loss outweighs gain—even making an accounting every day or even once a week is too much. It is better to invest your talents in positive actions influencing your environment; Hashem repays measure for measure—many times over.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches never to despair or lose hope; age does not limit G‑d's blessings. Trust should be placed above all in Hashem's power rather than solely relying on human expertise. Channeling one's energy into positivity brings both personal fulfillment and Divine blessing.
