Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 8th of Tammuz regarding not knowing your father's yahrzeit day (may his memory be a blessing): you should consult with Anash, and they should speak with your mother (may she live) to clarify which day is most likely closest to the yahrzeit, and establish it as such.
Regarding what you wrote about putting on tefillin upon reaching twelve years: although such a custom is mentioned, I have not seen it practiced among Anash to change the start of tefillin for an orphan. He should follow what is brought in Hayom Yom—to begin putting on tefillin two months before his bar mitzvah.
With blessing, in the name of the Rebbe shlita, Mazkir
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that when a yahrzeit date is unknown, one should consult with trusted community members and family to determine the most likely date. For tefillin, even an orphan should follow standard practice as outlined in Hayom Yom.
