Shalom u'Vrachah!
I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 11th of Adar Rishon, in which you write about your friend... Surely you will also inform me of his mother's name, as explained in the holy Zohar and also hinted at in the Talmud: regarding matters of health—both physical and spiritual—one must mention the mother's name (see Zohar I, 84a; Shabbat 66b; Panim Yafot at the end of Parshat Beha'alotecha; Divrei Torah Mahadurat Devarim Torah section 5).
And according to our Sages' teaching that the Torah gave permission to a doctor to heal and one should not rely on a miracle, it is necessary to consult a specialist doctor in this field and follow his instructions. It is also understood that his tefillin should be checked as well as the mezuzot in the room where he sleeps. One should try to divert his mind from thoughts about himself and cheer him up in an appropriate way.
May Hashem grant him to share good news regarding the above, as well as that they fulfill the demands of our holy Torah—which is especially emphasized by our master, the Baal Shem Tov of blessed memory—and upon all Israel: that serving Hashem must be done specifically with joy, as it is written: "Serve Hashem with joy," which is also a practical halachic ruling at the end of Rambam's Laws of Lulav.
And since in Hilchot De'ot as well as Tur and Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim siman 231 it is ruled that a great principle in a person's life is to serve Hashem in all your ways, it is understood that this halachic ruling mentioned above—to serve Hashem with joy—applies here as well.
With blessing for Torah study with awe of Heaven, awaiting good news. In the name of the Rebbe shlita.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that when praying for someone's health or wellbeing, one should mention their mother's name. He stresses combining spiritual efforts with practical steps like medical consultation and emphasizes serving Hashem with joy in all circumstances.
