Dealing with Strange Thoughts During Prayer and Study

The Rebbe writes that to counter strange thoughts, one should increase Torah and prayer, memorize Tanya and Mishnayos, and keep a siddur or sefer open during prayer and study. Focusing on the text helps refocus the mind. He blesses the recipient for a successful year.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 28th of Adar.

Regarding strange thoughts, one should increase engagement with the letters of Torah and prayer, and also engrave in one's mind the memory of certain chapters of Tanya and Mishnayos. This serves as protection even when not actively reviewing them—even in thought—as is evident in Likkutei Torah at the end of Parshas Kedoshim.

Therefore, it is appropriate to also learn by heart the aforementioned discourse and "Hadaras Pnei Zaken." Since these distracting thoughts often occur specifically during prayer and learning, it is good that during these times the siddur or sefer being studied should be open before you at your place. When you feel your thoughts are wandering, immediately look into the siddur or sefer—the written letters help anchor you.

Regarding your upcoming birthday mentioned in your letter: May it be G‑d's will that you have a successful year. Since you still have several weeks to prepare, surely you will strive to increase diligence, consistency, and dedication during this time, and may Hashem grant you success.

Blessings.

Summary
