Shalom u'Vrachah!
It was with pleasure that I received the news from Haraha"ch vavac"h iy"a nu"m involved with tzt"z Moreinu HaRav Dovber Boimgarten, that on the upcoming Shabbos Parshas Terumah they are arranging a siyum on Mishnayos Maseches Berachos at Kiddusha Rabba. May the will of Hashem succeed in their hands, so that just as they completed these Mishnayos, so too may they begin and complete other tractates, and continue their study with expanded understanding. Then will be fulfilled the teaching of our Sages: "You have toiled—and you have found."
It is known why the beginning of the tractates is Maseches Berachos, and within this tractate itself, it starts with the laws of Krias Shema—just as it says: "Reishis Chochmah Yiras Hashem" (the beginning of wisdom is fear of Hashem), which is the concept of Krias Shema. As stated in the Mishnah at the beginning of chapter two of Berachos: Parshas Shema is acceptance of the yoke of Heaven; Parshas Vehaya Im Shamoa is acceptance of the yoke of mitzvos.
This also explains why in the mitzvah of Krias Shema itself, we begin with its laws for evenings—at night. For when a person begins serving Hashem, he is still in darkness—both because of the world as a whole and mainly because of his own body and animal/natural soul. These conceal and darken the light of truth—that only Hashem Elokim is true and there is nothing besides Him; all existence from heaven to earth and everything between exists only from His true existence. Thus it follows that He is Master over all (as explained at length in Rambam Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah at its start).
The beginning of service in such a state must be to accept upon oneself the yoke of Heaven and Torah/mitzvos (in the words of Rabbeinu Yeshayahu Acharon z"l), just as at Matan Torah generally Israel said "Naaseh v'Nishma." This also explains what is written in explanation to Gemara: therefore Mishnah begins with Krias Shema at night—as creation began with darkness first (reisha chashicha), concealment and obscuring G‑dly light, then came illumination—the light brought by man's service which brings G‑dly light into the world.
This applies also to a person's life—he is called a "small world" (see Shabbos 74b s.v. Vayakam Edus; Sefer HaMaamarim 5709). One should not say: I have time to contemplate or consult whether to begin or continue this service etc., or think this matter concerns only him personally—who can tell him what to do? For each individual is part of all creation, and upon each one lies the commandment from this week's parsha: "They shall make Me a sanctuary and I will dwell among them." Our Sages note: it does not say 'among him' but 'among them'—within every single Jew.
Just as every day requires morning and evening prayers corresponding to daily offerings and incense—which were brought physically in the Beis HaMikdash—so too prayer today replaces offerings and must be done within one's spiritual sanctuary—that is, within every Jew. From this we understand that just as a sanctuary means holiness and service to Hashem (hence called "house of prayer," serve Hashem with awe—and this service is prayer), so too all aspects of man's service are about knowing and making known that everything was/is/will be by His word—the foundation for this being (and its goal) as discussed above regarding Krias Shema: fear of Heaven and acceptance of His sovereignty. This is also the purpose behind Torah study and mitzvah observance—as it says: "Hashem commanded us to do all these statutes—to fear Hashem our G‑d."
The Holy One blessed be He can be trusted to fulfill His promise at the end of this verse: "for our good always—to keep us alive as on this day." As explained by Torah commentators: for our good both in this world and in the World to Come.
Blessings for success both in communal Torah study and individually; for fulfillment of mitzvos; for increasing Ner Mitzvah v'Torah Or—with all your heart, soul, might—in thought, speech, action throughout daily life.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that spiritual growth often begins amid darkness—externally from society but especially internally from one's own nature. By accepting upon oneself the yoke of Heaven even when it's difficult or unclear, one transforms darkness into light through persistent Torah study and mitzvah observance.
