Sadness Distracts from Divine Mission and Weakens Daily Life

The Rebbe writes that sadness should be avoided as it harms many areas, especially one's ability to fulfill their Divine mission. He explains that negative thoughts often arise during prayer, not business, and encourages focusing on positivity to influence oneself and others.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I hereby confirm receipt of your letter from the fourth of Vayechi, and I am very dissatisfied with what you write about being in a state of sadness. Even though you bring an example of other Jews who are also sad, in general one should only be persistent in good things, but not in those matters that bring harm to many areas. Most importantly, sadness interferes with fulfilling the mission from Hakadosh Baruch Hu that each person has in this physical and material world. As the Alter Rebbe writes at the beginning of chapter 26 in his holy Sefer Tanya: when one is "with laziness and heaviness," he will be easily defeated and fall even if he is stronger than his opponent; so too it is with overcoming the yetzer hara, etc. And it is unnecessary to elaborate on this, as one convinces oneself of it daily.

The second point I have regarding your letter is similar to what is brought in Chassidus: we see clearly that foreign thoughts fall into one's mind specifically during davening—at that time he starts thinking about business or family matters, etc.—but when he is occupied with business matters, no other thoughts such as about davening or family enter his mind. So too in your case: when one is sad, does this not only disturb (according to our Sages) the resting of the Shechinah but also weakens one's energy in business matters? The main thing is—it seems this paragraph is missing!—this is one of the tricks of the yetzer hara who does not want a person to conduct himself according to the will of the Creator.

I am sure you will not be upset with me for writing the above, and I am also sure that no further persuasion is needed. May Hashem help you and me to hear good and joyful news from each other.

With blessing and regards to your students and surroundings—after all, the entire environment must be influenced since we are not carrying out our own personal matter but rather clarifying and refining things; as a result, we also draw them closer to Torah and mitzvos and holiness in general. May Hashem grant you success.

With blessing.

P.S. In continuation to the above: I have requested that they send you the Tanya which was printed for the first time in America. Surely this will add strength for your own learning as well as learning with others; then Hashem fulfills His promise: "He enlightens both their eyes," as the Alter Rebbe writes in his introduction to his holy Sefer Tanya.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that sadness disrupts both spiritual mission and daily life. By focusing on positivity and resisting negative thoughts—especially during prayer—we can better fulfill our purpose and positively influence those around us.
