...ידוע, אשר רפואה מתקנת מכאן ולהבא (כתובות עד, ב) אבל אפשר גם לעקור את כל [הענין] מעיקרו (ראה חולין מח, א. שו"ת צפנת פענח ח"א סי"ד). והנה הגוף חיותו ובריאותו תלוים בנפש, וחיות ובריאות הנפש של איש הישראלי תלוים בתומ"צ, וכמרז"ל רמ"ח מ"ע כנגד רמ"ח אברים שס"ה מל"ת כנגד שס"ה גידים (זהר ח"א קע, ב) שאין זה רק דמיון במספר, אלא אדרבה מפני שייכות הענינים זל"ז משתוים הם במספרן (ראה תניא פרק נ"א).
והנה ברפואת האדם ברוחניות, רפואת הנפש, שמזה משתלשלת רפואת הגוף, ישנם ג"כ שני האופנים, אם רק תיקן המצב מכאן ולהבא, או עקירת הדבר מעיקרו והוא אם ע"י עבודה מיראה או מאהבה (יומא פו, א), אשר ע"י עבודה מאהבה לא נשאר גם רושם ממצב הבלתי מתאים הקודם ברוחניות, וחוזרים לאיתנם בגשמיות וברוחניות, לאיתן שבגוף ע"י גילוי איתן שבנשמה (ראה קו"א בתניא ד"ה וצדקה כנחל, לקו"ת ר"פ ראה, ד"ה אנכי נותן לפניכם היום ברכה).

It is known that healing corrects matters from now onward (see Ketubot 74b), but it is also possible to uproot the entire matter from its source (see Chullin 48a; Shut Tzafnat Paneach I:14).
The body’s vitality and health depend on the soul, and the vitality and health of a Jewish soul depend on Torah and mitzvot. As our Sages said: the 248 positive commandments correspond to the body’s 248 limbs, and the 365 prohibitions correspond to its 365 sinews (Zohar I:170b). This is not merely a numerical analogy; rather, because of their intrinsic connection, they match in number (see Tanya ch. 51).
In spiritual healing—healing of the soul—from which physical healing descends, there are also two approaches: either one merely corrects matters from now onward or one uproots the issue entirely. This depends on whether one serves out of awe or out of love (Yoma 86a). Through service out of love, not even a trace remains of previous spiritual shortcomings; one returns to full strength both physically and spiritually—physical strength is restored through revealing the soul’s innate strength (see Tanya’s gloss "VeTzedakah KeNahal," Likkutei Torah beginning Parshat Re’eh, "Anochi Noten Lifneichem Hayom Berachah").
Summary
True healing starts with the soul. When one serves G‑d out of love—teshuvah me’ahavah—not only are past misdeeds erased spiritually, but this also brings renewed physical health by revealing the soul’s essential strength within the body.
