Mr. Baruch Litvin sheyichyeh

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I received your letter from after Shavuos. As I mentioned at the end of my first letter to you, you should not take offense that my response regarding the work in "Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch" and "Machane Yisrael" was delayed.

I am surprised that you did not mention anything in your letter about your progress in learning both privately and publicly. Presumably, you will write about this next time. Most importantly—may there be good news to report on this matter.

You write that since the state of Judaism in your city and surrounding towns is not good, you have fallen into sadness! Do you think this is a solution or means to improve the situation? Surely you know that the Alter Rebbe writes in Tanya (chapter 26) that on the contrary, through sadness one becomes even weaker in the battle every Jew must wage with his own yetzer hara and generally with the evil in the world. And if he sees that the enemy is strengthening himself G‑d forbid, he must become even more energetic and seek new ways and strategies to overcome him—remembering Hashem's promise: "Et ruach hatumah aavir min haaretz" (I will remove the spirit of impurity from the land), and "Vera'u kol basar yachdav ki pi Hashem diber" (All flesh will see together that the mouth of G‑d has spoken)—this alone should give courage and strength to each of us to wage our battle on our part of the front where we find ourselves, knowing that every good action is never lost; even if he does not see it with his physical eyes, with every good thought, word or deed he makes his surroundings brighter and brings closer the true redemption.

The "Three Weeks" and "Nine Days" which have just passed—which seemingly bring sadness—also contain a hint of hope and comfort. Our prophets also promised us that this sorrowful period from Shiva Asar b'Tammuz until Tisha B'Av will be transformed into a time of joy when Moshiach Tzidkeinu will come speedily in our days, Amen.

In earlier times when the Beis HaMikdash stood in its place, its physical structure of wood and stone was also a symbol of the spiritual Beis HaMikdash within and among the Jewish people. The physical Beis HaMikdash could exist only as long as its spiritual counterpart existed. When the first Beis HaMikdash was destroyed—the spiritual aspect by our people themselves, then physically soon after by Nevuchadnezzar king of Bavel—our people in Babylonian exile had a double task: first to rebuild the spiritual Beis HaMikdash, then its physical structure—the Second Temple.

The Second Beis HaMikdash also lasted only as long as its spiritual component endured; with its spiritual destruction came inevitably its physical destruction as well. But regarding the Third Beis HaMikdash, Hashem has told us that our main—and according to many opinions exclusive—task is to rebuild only its spiritual aspect; Hashem Himself will provide for its physical part. According to Rashi Tosafos etc., the Third Beis HaMikdash will be built by Heaven.

Therefore, however, it is up to us to build its spiritual aspect through our efforts—through teshuvah, Torah and mitzvos. Every spiritual "brick" each Jew creates can never be destroyed; this process began at the very moment when the last part of Beis HaMikdash Sheini stood in flames. This is one of the deeper meanings of the Midrash (Eicha Rabbah) which says that at the moment of Churban Beis HaMikdash Moshiach was born.

The main parts of building this spiritual Beis HaMikdash have already been established by previous generations—the spiritual giants among our people. We are left only to complete a smaller portion—but our part must be permeated with the same holiness as those earlier generations.

The practical outcome is: we should be permeated with awareness that every good action according to Torah we do in our daily life—no matter how great or small it may seem in our physical eyes—we are thereby laying one of the final "bricks" in this eternal Beis HaMikdash for our people and for all humanity; through this we fulfill our part both in building its spiritual aspect and preparing for its physical rebuilding which will follow immediately thereafter speedily in our days.

May Hashem grant that we all merit also building the physical Beis HaMikdash speedily in our days, Amen.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that sadness weakens one's ability to improve oneself or one's surroundings. Every positive act adds an eternal 'brick' to rebuilding holiness for all Israel; perseverance brings both personal growth and collective redemption closer.
