Bar and bas mitzvah – When to celebrate

בר מצוה ובת מצוה – מועד החגיגה

Hold the celebration on the birthday itself, even if it falls on Pesach or Erev Yom Kippur (IK 3725, 6684, 7201, 7224, 8239). Don't postpone it until the family can afford a large feast (IK 8211). Where the seudas mitzvah can't be held on time and there is no local custom otherwise, make it on the following Shabbos (IK 5574). An earlier celebration is permissible if it brings more Torah learning and observance (IK 5928). A boy who turns thirteen on Rosh Hashanah is called up that day (IK 6234).
