B"H, — Zot Chanukah, 5733.

Brooklyn, NY.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letters. As we stand at the conclusion and seal of the days of Chanukah—may it be that these lights shine in their fullness and completeness throughout the entire year, in a manner of ever-increasing light both inwardly and outwardly together, until we merit the fulfillment of the prophecy: 'And it shall come to pass that at evening time there shall be light,' that night will shine like day.

With blessing, M. Schneersohn

I was naturally saddened by your absence from your Chabad post in Bitka. May it be for good, with double success in the future. Blessings for a complete recovery and good health.

Zot Chanukah: It is noteworthy that on Zot Chanukah there is an increase in Torah reading; we read all the portions for all days of the dedication of the altar, reading Parashat HaNesi'im—and this reading is considered as if it were in its proper time and applies to all (see Rashi Megillah 31a). In Kabbalistic writings (the AriZal), each day of Chanukah corresponds to one attribute among the Thirteen Attributes; on the eighth day—from Notzer through Venakeh. In the tzt"z's maamar 'Baruch She'asah Nissim' (Brooklyn, 5711), see end: chet amud alef zeh kach v'chulei—see there.

Conclusion of Chanukah: The eight days of Chanukah are a single entity—not separate (Tzafnat Paneach edition T by Gaon HaRogatchover p. 118). This applies regarding the miracle of oil which depended on the moment when the jar was found (and thus answers why there was a miracle on the first day; others answer that they are separate days), but it is sweetened by understanding: a miracle occurred and they lit from it; thus we understand why a candle that goes out is forbidden to use its light or oil for personal needs all eight days (Riaz on Shabbat laws of Chanukah s.v.). The completeness of all days is specifically on Zot Chanukah.

May these lights shine: Their explanation in human service—in brief—and more can be found in Chassidic discourses on Chanukah from our Rebbeim.

Throughout the year: Explained at greater length in a letter from this year's Chanukah days.

The prophecy: Zechariah 14:7. See Yalkut Shimoni there. Likkutei Torah Bamidbar 8:1.

'And it shall come to pass at evening': And its conclusion there—'And Hashem will be King over all the earth,' etc., and in Zohar I end Parashat Noach that this follows 'Then I will turn to peoples... to serve Him with one accord.' See Ohel Torah to Tzefaniah (3:9) regarding 'then'—all as above regarding Zot Chanukah.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that the spiritual illumination of Chanukah continues throughout the year. By internalizing its lessons and increasing in light daily, we prepare ourselves for redemption when darkness will turn into light for all humanity.
