Organization of Disabled Veterans of the War of Independence and the IDF in our holy land may it be rebuilt and established by our righteous Moshiach speedily in our days.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to receive your letter through Lieutenant Colonel Ezra Aharonson, who also informed me about the classes you are holding in the study of our holy Torah, which is called Toras Chaim (the Torah of life—meaning it guides life to be truly worthy) and Toras Emes (the Torah of truth—meaning its guidance is true), for truth rejects compromise. Certainly, as educators in the IDF who are primarily people of action, your learning—following the style of our Sages—is a study that leads to action.

Furthermore—and this is most important, as discussed many times—the entire existence of the army is based on two points: (a) Discipline, or in our Sages' words—acceptance of the yoke; or in the well-known phrase: Naaseh v'Nishma ("We will do and we will hear"), with "we will do" preceding "we will hear." That is to say: when a soldier receives an order, the procedure is to fulfill it promptly and in the best way possible without first asking for a reason or whether he agrees or if it could be done differently. First and foremost comes "we will do," and only after fulfilling the order—if he has time and opportunity—can he investigate and understand; that is "we will hear," meaning understanding (as in the verse: "And they did not know that Yosef understood them because an interpreter was between them").

(b) The second point on which the army is founded: when a soldier receives an order from his commander, it does not matter at all what their relationship is in other areas—even if in civilian life it would be reversed: perhaps the soldier was his commander's teacher in wisdom or science or economics etc., or even if there is a great disparity between them—the soldier being extremely wealthy materially or spiritually while the commander is poor. But since within the army framework the commander has more knowledge and experience and has dedicated his life to learning military conduct—the soldier fulfills his command without questioning it at all; how things stand elsewhere makes no difference whatsoever—it does not interfere with fulfilling orders.

There is another point—also essential: within the army framework there can be no claim that one's actions are purely private matters into which no one should interfere or that everyone can do as they see fit. It is clear that one action by one soldier somewhere can have decisive consequences for his entire unit—or even for an entire front—and even for the fate of all citizens living there.

All these points apply to every Jew everywhere—for every Jew is a soldier in G‑d's army. That is why at Matan Torah there was a precondition before receiving it: Naaseh before Nishma—the acceptance of Heaven's yoke and fulfilling instructions from Israel's sages who have dedicated their lives to studying Torah and understanding it—even giving up their lives for this study. Here too it makes no difference how one stands compared to others—whether wealthier than them or not.

Certainly for people like yourselves there is no need for further elaboration.

A special heartfelt thanks for honoring me by giving me your organization's emblem.

May it be G‑d's will that each one of us protect Am Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael, and Toras Yisrael—which are all one entity—to whatever extent possible through deed, speech, and even thought. This too hastens fulfillment of what is promised in Parshas Bechukosai ("If you walk in My statutes...and perform them...you shall dwell securely in your land; I will grant peace in your land...I will be your G‑d and you shall be My people," etc.), culminating with "I will lead you upright"—in the complete true redemption through our righteous Moshiach.

With honor and blessing for fulfillment of each one's heart's desires for good—and in a manner reflecting Chanukah's approach whose main mitzvah these days is lighting Chanukah candles—increasing light day by day until light grows ever stronger.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that military discipline mirrors spiritual discipline: just as soldiers act with obedience regardless of personal status or relationships, so too must Jews accept G‑d’s commandments wholeheartedly. Collective responsibility unites Am Yisrael as we increase light together.
