אחד מהטעמים הגלויים: העובר כולו נבנה מטפת משהו – לגוף משוכלל (ומבנה הגוף משפיע גם על תכונות הנפש במדה חשובה) – ע"י האם בלבד (ובזמן שהותו בעיבור – אוכל ממה שאמו אוכלת וכו'), ועד כדי כך שרואים במוחש שרוחניות האם (ואם היא בשמחה או בפחד וכיו"ב) משפיעה, וגם מעצבת החרקטער (האופי) של העובר (שיולד שלם ובריא וכו').

One of the revealed reasons: the entire fetus is built from a mere drop into a fully formed body (and the structure of the body also affects the traits of the soul to a significant degree) — by the mother alone. (During its time in the womb, "it eats from what its mother eats, etc.") This goes so far that one sees tangibly that the mother's spiritual state (and whether she is joyful or fearful, and the like) has an effect, and even shapes the character (the nature) of the fetus (that it be born whole and healthy, etc.).

In answer to the question of how to explain, to those who do not believe in Torah and mitzvos, why in an intermarriage the child follows the mother.
"אוכל ממה שאמו אוכלת וכו'" ("it eats from what its mother eats, etc."): Niddah 30b [נדה ל, ב].
Summary
