Reconciling Moon Landing, Torah Verses, and Human Smallness

שלמה זלמן — Shlomo Zalman   ב"ה , ימי הסליחות, ה'תשל"א — ברוקלין, נ.י.
The Rebbe addresses questions about the moon landing's impact on faith, clarifying that it does not contradict Torah verses or diminish human humility. He emphasizes that true challenges to faith arise from scientific discoveries affecting free will and nature, not from space exploration.

Havav"ch iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z rav pe'alim etc. Shlomo Zalman

Shalom u'Vrachah!

As the new year approaches, which is coming upon us and all of Israel for good and blessing, I hereby express my blessing to you and all yours: may you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year in both material and spiritual matters.

With honor and blessing.

I thank you for your attention in sending me what you have written and published. Surely you will continue this good practice in the future as well, retroactively included.

I read with great astonishment the discussion in Ma'ariv etc., about how to explain the moon landing in a way that does not undermine faith or Torah or reflection on human smallness etc.—and of course it begins with the apparent contradiction from the explicit verse: 'HaShamayim Shamayim LaHashem VeHaAretz Natan Livnei Adam' ("The heavens are the heavens of G‑d, but the earth He has given to mankind")—and there are many interpretations of 'heavens', starting from 'the birds of the heavens' up to 'G‑d is in heaven and you are on earth' (Kohelet 5:1). Note also Solomon's prayer where both appear together: 'When heaven is restrained and there is no rain...the heavens are Your dwelling place...' (I Kings 8). In general—from the outset there is no room for such a question; as his friend would say: 'The high mountains are for wild goats; rocks are a refuge for hyraxes.' And there are several such verses as well.

The question from the blessing of Kiddush Levanah—'I am unable to touch you'—is answered within itself; before it we say 'I dance against you,' and (through this dance) I am unable to touch you—so too they cannot etc. As brought by Chazal as something impossible unless one ascends to the firmament—even so, regarding landing on the moon itself—since it says 'And G‑d placed them in the firmament of the heavens' (and more on this)—it would be preferable to raise questions from other such verses. (For example Iyov 38–39. And they have gone into ocean depths, Nile rivers—He split a channel for flooding through human action etc.).

Regarding human smallness etc.—it is even more surprising that none of those offering explanations (whose words I have seen in print or writing or speech) addressed this point: that as a scientific innovation and an addition to scientific understanding of creation, landing on the moon—which did not cause any scientific revolution at all nor even a surprising novelty—cannot be compared to penetrating inside the atom which led to undermining and negating several foundations of science—and has implications regarding free choice, miracle versus nature etc.—and so too with other innovations before this. Even more so regarding Torah itself and its laws—the L‑rd said: "My children have defeated Me," and moreover He smiled when saying it (Bava Metzia 59b).

And regarding all such matters Maimonides writes in his Mishneh Torah at the beginning of Hilchos Avodah Zarah: "In the days of Enosh humanity made a great error...G‑d created these stars...and gave them honor...as time passed His glorious Name was forgotten..." See also Rambam Hilchos Teshuvah 2:2: "Not one among all created beings...even if one who worships knows that Hashem is G‑d..."

We conclude with good.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that modern achievements like landing on the moon do not challenge Torah or faith; true challenges arise only when scientific discoveries affect foundational concepts like free will or nature. Faith remains unshaken by technological progress.
