Shalom u'Vrachah! Blessings and peace!
In response to your letter from the first of Tammuz, mainly regarding your meeting with a certain individual etc., and your request for my opinion concerning this shidduch.
In general, it is neither proper nor good to begin building family life in opposition to the wishes of parents who have invested much effort and care in raising their daughter (or son), hoping to see true satisfaction from her (or him) in every way. Certainly, this is also the reason for the parents' opposition, as you write—because they do not see this match as good or suitable for her etc.
Additionally, if the young man is upright and possesses good character traits, surely he would not want to be the cause or reason for division between a daughter and her parents.
The above applies generally; however, there is particular weight to these reasons when it concerns the eldest son or daughter in the family. To a significant degree, this sets an example for younger siblings who follow.
It is understood that my intention here is not that one should become a sacrifice for their parents; rather, it is simply not good or appropriate for the daughter (and likewise for the young man in question) to begin building life based on division of hearts in general—and especially between children and parents.
I would also add that based on my impression from meeting several times with her father and once with her mother, I am certain that they only seek her welfare.
May Hashem, Who watches over every individual with Divine Providence, provide her with her proper match soon in every detail.
Especially since you wrote during the days leading up to Yemei HaGeulah (the redemption days—specifically Yud-Beis–Yud-Gimmel Tammuz) of my revered teacher and father-in-law the Rebbe, which brings additional blessing to Jews in general—and especially to those involved in educational institutions conducted in his spirit—in which you also have a fine share as a teacher at one of them.
Blessings for success in all your matters and for good news regarding what was discussed above.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that harmony with parents is crucial when considering marriage. Building a home should not come at the cost of family unity—especially for eldest children who set an example. Parental concern stems from love; trust that G‑d will provide a suitable match.
