לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך, היתה לי הפתעה נעימה לקבל מכתבו בצירוף טיוטה
מספרו
העומד להופיע, ושואל דעתי בזה.
והנה בכלל קשה לחוות דעת בזה כיון שלא הכרתי אישית את הרה"ג והרה"ח וכו' הרא"ל זצ"ל שהספר מוקדש לזכרונו וההכרות היתה רק
על ידי מכתבים
ומידיעות על דבר פעולותיו הכי נעלות. אבל מובן שחשוב ביותר לפרסם אורח חייו ופעולותיו, ובפרט בדורנו, שהנוער תועה בדרכים לא דרכים ורק שברו הצלמים של דור הקודם אבל טרם מצאו דרכם בחיים. ומרוב הצמאון לתוכן ומרוב הפחד מפני הריקות מגששים באפילה להיתלות בכל מיני "אידיאלים". שלכן ערך גדול ביותר לספר שממנו ילמדו על דבר אדם שאך זה עתה חי ביניהם, שאף שהי' חניך הדור הקודם היו לו קשרים הדוקים עם הכי מתקדמים אשר בדורנו וכו' וכו'.
לאידך אין בידי לחוות דעת על דבר הספר עצמו ומה יש להדגיש יותר וכדומה, כי אם להביע הרושם שלי בכללות אשר בקראי את הטיוטה נתחזק אצלי עוד יותר ענין ההכרח להוציא לאור ספר כזה, ותבוא עליו ברכה.
ובודאי בירושלים נמצאים כמה וכמה מתלמידי הרא"ל זצ"ל ויתיעץ עמהם בהאמור
וכבר נאמר
ותשועה ברוב יועץ.
נכתב מכתב כ' בימי הגאולה של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, שתקותי שיודע פרשת המאסר והגאולה שלו.
ויהי רצון אשר ככל ימי זכרון מדברי ימי גדולי אומתנו, בגדלות האמיתית, ילמד כל אחד לקח בהעלותו בזכרונו תוכן המאורע סיבתו ותוצאותיו וכו', וניכר יהי' זכרון זה במעשה בפועל, ו

מעשה הוא העיקר.

After the longest pause, I was pleasantly surprised to receive your letter along with the draft of your forthcoming book, and you ask my opinion about it. In general, it is difficult for me to give an opinion since I did not personally know Harav G. and Harav Ch., etc., Harav L. zatzal, to whose memory the book is dedicated; my acquaintance was only through letters and reports regarding his most elevated activities.
However, it is clear that it is extremely important to publicize his way of life and activities—especially in our generation when youth wander in paths that are not paths; they have only shattered the idols of the previous generation but have not yet found their own way in life. Out of great thirst for content and fear of emptiness, they grope in darkness seeking to cling to all sorts of ideals.
Therefore, there is tremendous value in a book from which one can learn about a person who only recently lived among them—who, although educated in the previous generation, maintained close ties with the most progressive people of our time, etc., etc.
On the other hand, I am unable to give an opinion about the book itself or what should be emphasized more and so forth; I can only express my overall impression that upon reading the draft my sense of the necessity to publish such a book was further strengthened—may it be blessed.
Certainly in Jerusalem there are several students of Harav L. zatzal; consult with them on this matter—as it is already said: "Salvation comes with many counselors."
This letter was written during the days of redemption of Kvod Kedushat Moreinu v'Rabbeinu Admor; I hope you are aware of his imprisonment and redemption story.
May it be G‑d's will that as with all memorial days from the chronicles of our nation's greats—in their true greatness—everyone will learn a lesson when recalling these events: their cause and consequences, etc.; and this remembrance should be evident in actual deed—as our Sages say: "Action is essential."
