Shalom u'Vrachah!

Blessings and greetings!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter in which you requested a blessing regarding [personal matter] from Tuesday, Iyar 3. At an auspicious time it will be read at the resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, of blessed memory.

Certainly it is unnecessary to emphasize the necessity of strengthening one's conduct in daily life so that it aligns with the directives of our Torah, the Torah of Life, and fulfilling its mitzvot about which it is said "VaChai Bahem" (and you shall live by them). Besides being a commandment from the Holy One Blessed be He, this is also the way to receive blessings for all that a person needs. There is nothing that stands in the way of willpower.

When a person experiences thoughts and feelings of regret about undesirable conduct or actions—and this happens frequently—it is necessary to clarify from where these thoughts originate: from one's good inclination or its opposite. The main test is what these thoughts produce: if they lead to increased energy and vitality in fulfilling mitzvot and strengthening daily conduct according to Shulchan Aruch (including—in your case—keeping school routines etc.), this is proof their source is pure and good. If they result in sadness, laxity, laziness or feelings of despair—this proves they come from the yetzer hara (which has merely disguised itself as piety), since all these (sadness etc.) interfere with one's service of Hashem. And regarding your situation—through good deeds you will bring satisfaction to your father's soul in Gan Eden, not through thoughts of despair and similar feelings.

Certainly your spiritual mentor will explain this at greater length as explained in many places.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that genuine regret should energize us toward positive action and mitzvah observance; if remorse leads instead to despair or passivity, it comes from the yetzer hara. Strengthening daily Torah living opens channels for blessing and uplifts both oneself and departed loved ones.
