Wedding Timing, Venue, and Parental Roles in Arranging a Shidduch

The Rebbe addresses questions about a shidduch, advising not to delay the wedding, holding it in the bride's location (USA), and that decisions should be made by the parents—not the couple or intermediaries. He urges direct communication to avoid misunderstandings.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of the telegram signed by her regarding the shidduch of their son and the mechutanim, etc. Last night as well, the mechutanim spoke with me about this matter. I told them my opinion: since it was discussed to hold the wedding in Adar at an auspicious time, it is not customary at all to postpone the wedding date.

b) According to common practice in most cases, the wedding takes place at the bride's location. In this case as well, that is my opinion—especially since I recall it was already agreed that the wedding would be in the United States. However, if the mechutanim agree and decide to change from ... to New York, that too fits within this custom.

c) Although I believe this was also discussed: I repeat again that after the wedding for a period of time, the groom should study in kollel here in America—in New York. Since it is customary for kollel study to last about two years, my opinion is that this should certainly be so: he should study in kollel here after the bride completes her work in education at ... during 5730 and 5731. Afterward, the young couple will discuss between themselves where they will live after that.

d) With great surprise I learned that discussions about these details and similar matters are being conducted by the groom and bride themselves—which is not their concern at all; rather, it pertains solely to the mechutanim (parents), for obvious reasons. I have already publicized my view on this many times. What has already happened is past; but I told the mechutanim—and said I would write them as well—that from now on neither groom nor bride should conduct such negotiations at all.

e) I also learned that many matters are being handled through intermediaries and agents etc., which has led to misunderstandings and even ridicule. I told them that from now on there is no place for intermediaries or agents; letters should be sent directly between mechutanim—no need for go-betweens; on the contrary—it is easier this way.

Because of all of the above and to prevent undesirable situations, this letter is being sent without waiting for its turn—quickly and urgently. Please confirm receipt of it as well in this manner.

With honor and blessing.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that wedding arrangements—including timing and venue—should follow established custom and be decided by parents rather than by the couple or intermediaries. Direct communication helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures a smooth process.
