Shalom u'Vrachah!
I acknowledge receipt of the letter from the 10th of Kislev and its enclosure. Thank you for the blessings regarding the forty-year period. As our Sages say: "Your word has already been stated," meaning your blessing is already written—"and I (the Holy One) will bless those who bless you." May it be in a manner of increase, for the increase from the Holy One is greater than the principal.
I was especially pleased to hear that many among those who blessed joined their blessing with an act—giving charity, studying a Torah topic, etc. There are three ascending levels in this: performing a mitzvah increases (in this world and the next) not only for the doer but for the entire world; even more so when one causes another to do it (even unknowingly); and above all—when it is done in merit of someone else.
I therefore propose and request that each member of those offering blessings combine both study and action—for each has what the other lacks. Moreover, giving charity elevates all mitzvah actions; charity is equal to them all and is life for humanity. Just as fish live in water, so too by increasing charity—life is added to a person and thus to all his actions.
This is especially relevant as these days fall between the redemption days of the Mitteler Rebbe (10 Kislev) and the Alter Rebbe (19 Kislev), whose redemptions are connected to the verse: "Padah v'Shalom Nafshi miKrav li ki b'Rabim hayu imadi" (He redeemed my soul in peace from battles against me because many were with me). Our Sages explain: The Holy One says that anyone who engages in Torah study, acts of kindness, and prays with the community—I consider it as if he redeemed Me and My children from among the nations.
With blessings for Chag HaGeulah,
M. Schneersohn
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that combining Torah study with acts of charity brings great blessing—not only to oneself but to all creation—and that communal prayer holds special power. Especially during times linked to redemption, unity in action and intent elevates everyone involved.
