This year, the annual luncheon is being held soon after Shabbos Parshas Beha'aloscha, and this letter is also written during the week connected to this Torah portion about kindling the lights.
In general, there are three types of lighting: The lights of the Menorah in the Beis HaMikdash—the mitzvah given to Aharon and his sons, the Kohanim. However, these lights were kindled only as long as the Beis HaMikdash existed. The lights of Chanukah—the mitzvah given to all Jews, at all times, observed every year during the eight days of Chanukah. The Shabbos and Yom Tov candles—the lights that a Jewish woman kindles every Erev Shabbos and Erev Yom Tov throughout the entire year.
The purpose of lighting these candles is to spread "Ner Mitzvah v'Torah Or" (the light of mitzvah and Torah), so that Hashem will cause His Divine Presence to rest not only in the Beis HaMikdash but in every Jewish home and every Jewish heart.
This again emphasizes the important place that the Jewish woman occupies in illuminating her home with the light of Torah and mitzvos so that it becomes a dwelling for the Divine Presence.
This also underscores the importance of your work in supporting Lubavitch's holy Torah institutions, which gives you a share in their great and multifaceted activities.
May it be Hashem's will that this merit stand by all of you so that your annual undertaking will be crowned with great success, and each one of you together with your families should be blessed with everything you need from His full, open, holy, and generous hand.
