Adoption, Jewish Status, and Proper Education

The Rebbe writes that when adopting children whose maternal Jewish status is uncertain, a rabbi must be consulted regarding conversion. If the children are raised as Jews and will integrate into the Jewish community, efforts should be made to convert them. Their education must follow Torah and mitzvos.

Regarding your writing about those who have adopted children—if it is not certain that their mother is Jewish, a rabbi must be consulted: the children may require conversion and similar procedures. In such a case, the rabbi or similar authority should strive to convert them, since they are being raised as Jews and will in any case mix among the Jewish people, etc. It is understood that their education must be according to Torah and mitzvos.
