Shalom u'Vrachah!

After a longer trip, your letter from Rosh Chodesh Elul has arrived, and at an auspicious time you will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, according to the content of your writing.

It is understandable that there is great astonishment when reading the beginning of your letter regarding sadness and a negative mood. Surely you are aware of what is explained in many holy books, especially in the teachings of Chassidus, that sadness must be completely distanced. In fact, it is clear to any understanding person that at the start of the day one says Birchos HaShachar (the morning blessings), and even before that, Modeh Ani Lefanecha (I thank You), which also means its literal translation; this must bring great joy and not G‑d forbid the opposite of Modeh Ani. Certainly—for you it is unnecessary to elaborate on this.

Especially for you, who recently merited to marry off your children—may they live—in a good and successful hour, and more and more. Hopefully this will be enough to illuminate and clarify your situation as it is now, and from now on you should be joyful and glad-hearted as our holy Torah instructs us—the Torah of life.

And especially since we are now in these good days of the month of Elul—the month of mercy and favor.

With blessing for good news and for being inscribed and sealed for good.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that sadness must be avoided entirely; instead, one should focus on gratitude and joy—especially during Elul. Recent personal blessings are reminders to remain positive and approach life with happiness as guided by Torah.
