במענה למכתבו מה' אלול, במ"ש אל מי לפנות בהנוגע להדרכה בלימוד החסידות.
כמדומני שמזמן לזמן מבקרים במקום מושבו מחסידי חב"ד, כן לפעמים קרובות בא הוא לירושלים ת"ו או לתל אביב, אשר שם נמצאים כמה מהנ"ל, אבל בכלל הרי בהשתדלות מתאימה, בטוחני שגם בעצמו יבין כשילמוד ולבו חפץ, שהרי מתבארים הענינים באר היטב בכמה מקומות, וכידוע מאמר רז"ל, בהנוגע לכל חלק תוה"ק, דברי תורה עניים במקום זה ועשירים במקום אחר, ולתכלית זו נדפס מפתח ענינים בסוף ספר התניא, תורה אור, דרך מצותיך ועוד בכדי למצוא ביאור הענין בכ"מ שאחד מוסיף באור על השני.
בנוגע ללימוד התניא בעצמו, עצתי בכגון דא היא, להתחיל בחלק אגרת התשובה, לאחרי זה שער היחוד והאמונה, ורק לאחרי זה חלק ראשון. כן מהנכון אשר ישיג קונטרס ומעין וספר דרך מצותיך לאדמו"ר הצמח צדק, שסגנונם מתאים יותר לזה שלא הורגל כ"כ בספרי חסידות, אבל כנ"ל העיקר לראש ולראשונה שיהי' כעצת חז"ל, לבו חפץ, והלימוד יהי' בהשתדלות וכהבטחתם יגעת ומצאת.

In response to your letter from the 5th of Elul, regarding whom to approach for guidance in studying Chassidus: It seems to me that from time to time, Chabad Chassidim visit your place of residence. Also, you often come to Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, where several such individuals can be found. However, in general, with appropriate effort, I am certain that you can understand on your own when you study with a willing heart. The concepts are explained very well in many places. As is known from our Sages regarding every part of the holy Torah: 'Divrei Torah ani'im b'makom zeh v'ashirim b'makom acher' (the words of Torah are poor in one place and rich in another). For this purpose, an index of topics was printed at the end of Sefer HaTanya, Torah Or, Derech Mitzvosecha, and more—to help find explanations on a topic wherever one text adds clarity over another.
Regarding studying Tanya itself, my advice in such a case is to begin with Iggeres HaTeshuvah; after that, Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah; and only then the first section. It is also proper to obtain Kuntres U'Maayan and Sefer Derech Mitzvosecha by the Admor tzt"z, whose style is more suited for someone not yet accustomed to Chassidic texts. But as above—the main thing first and foremost is that it should be as our Sages advise: "his heart desires," and the study should be with effort—as they assure us: "You have labored and you have found."
