Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 7th of Elul, in which you write about your brother who is attending gatherings of inciters and those who lead others astray, G‑d forbid, etc.
It is surprising that you do not mention anything regarding shidduchim for your brother—whether you have been involved in this and what the results were, etc.—as well as what he is doing regarding earning a livelihood or similar matters on a regular basis. These two points can be used to influence his speech and outlook on various matters that he expresses. For, as it seems from your letter, there is not much benefit in intellectual debate; rather, it is more effective to draw him into an appropriate lifestyle so that he generally will not encounter these inciters, etc., and on the contrary will be in an opposite environment or at least one where philosophical investigation is not pursued. Special attention should be given to finding suitable employment for him since he certainly needs money for various expenses. When he feels that he is earning and making money himself, there is reason to believe this will motivate him further—though of course arrangements should be made so that his earnings are minimal so he does not come to feel fully independent, etc.
It would be proper to check the mezuzos in their home to ensure all are kosher according to halachah, as well as your brother's tefillin [even if there are days when he does not put them on—they still belong to him]. When they are kosher, surely an opportune time will arise when he will put them on at least for a few moments. The power of tefillin is great—as our Sages ruled (Menachos 44a), they draw down life; this includes spiritual life (see Tur Orach Chaim 237).
At an auspicious time he will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal according to the content of your letter.
Since everything is by Divine Providence and you turned to me, I will also urge you and his father regarding the necessity of setting fixed times for studying the inner dimension of Torah which has been revealed in our generation through Chassidus. About this Moshe Rabbeinu said (Zohar III 124b) "there is no evil side there," and on the contrary it brings about "I will remove the spirit of impurity from the earth." If this was necessary at all times and in all countries—how much more so in our era and especially in this country.
May it be G‑d's will that just as you brought up this request so too you will soon share good news about it.
Blessings for good tidings and for being inscribed and sealed for good,
In the name of the Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that practical steps—like arranging shidduchim or work—can help guide someone away from negative influences more effectively than debate. Spiritual safeguards such as kosher mezuzos, tefillin, and learning Chassidus are vital tools for positive change.
