B"H, 8th of Kislev, 5719. Brooklyn.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 6th of Kislev and your questions:

a) How to behave with those who speak about Toras D'Ach—the teachings of Chassidus, etc. In your current position and situation, you should not enter into any arguments with them at all. Instead, increase your diligence and persistence in your studies of Nigleh (revealed Torah) and Chassidus. It is well known that even a little light dispels much darkness—especially a lot of light.

b) Advice for keeping your thoughts focused on learning, so they do not wander here and there: It is a well-known piece of advice to learn directly from inside the book and also to pray from within the siddur, as the letters hold onto one's thoughts. You surely know about the three well-known daily portions—Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya—and at least from now on you should be careful to keep them.

With blessing for good news in all the above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that instead of debating critics of Chassidus, one should focus on increasing Torah study and personal growth. To maintain concentration during learning or prayer, reading directly from the text helps anchor one's thoughts.
