במענה למכתבו מט"ז מ"ח והקודמו, מובן שאין דעתי נוחה כלל מהנראה מבין שיטות מכתבו, שמפני העדר שימת לב הדרושה בעניני פרנסתו, יש איזה פגם בהסחורה שלו, ומלבד הענין דבל תשחית, שגם זהו אזהרתו של הקב"ה כמו שאר המצות, הנה נוסף באלו המפרישים מהריוח שלהם סכומים נכונים לצדקה שהנ"ל נוגע גם בענין הצדקה, ואמת נכון דיוק תורת החסידות, יגיע כפיך כי תאכל אשריך וטוב לך, ולא יגיעת הראש, שכח ההתבוננות העמוקה צריך להיות בענינים רוחנים ולא בהנ"ל, אבל פשוט שעשי' בעניני פרנסה שעלי' נאמר וברכך ה' אלקיך בכל אשר תעשה, אי אפשר שתעשה בעינים סגורות ובכף יד בלבד, כי צריך עכ"פ שכל המעשי, ז.א. העשי' באופן שתתאים למטרת העשי'. ותקותי שעכ"פ להבא ילך בדרך התורה גם בזה, ז.א. שבעניני פרנסה יעשה בזה באופן שגם ע"פ הטבע יצליח, ואז נותן השי"ת ברכתו גם למעלה מהטבע, ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בהנ"ל...

In response to your letter from the 16th of Marcheshvan and the previous one: It is clear that I am not at all pleased by what can be inferred from your letters—that due to insufficient attention to your livelihood matters, there is some flaw in your business. Besides the issue of bal tashchis (not wasting), which is also a commandment from the Holy One Blessed be He like all other mitzvos, there is an additional aspect for those who set aside proper amounts from their profits for tzedakah—that this also affects the matter of tzedakah. It is true and correct according to Chassidus: 'Yegia kapecha ki tochel ashrecha v'tov lach' (When you eat from the labor of your hands you are fortunate and it is good for you), not 'yegias harosh' (the toil of the mind), as deep contemplation should be devoted to spiritual matters and not these. However, it is obvious that action in matters of livelihood—about which it says 'u'virechacha Hashem Elokecha b'chol asher taaseh' (and Hashem your G‑d will bless you in all that you do)—cannot be done blindly or with just a wave of the hand; rather, it requires at least practical intelligence. That means acting in a way that fits the purpose of the action. I hope that from now on you will follow the path of Torah in this as well—that in matters of livelihood you will act in a way that will also succeed according to nature; then Hashem gives His blessing even beyond nature. May we hear good news regarding all this...
