והרי מתקרבים אנו לימי חדש הרחמים והשמחה, והרי ידוע דאלו"ל ר"ת איש לרעהו ומתנות לאביונים, וידוע דרז"ל איש זה הקב"ה שנאמר ה' איש מלחמה וגו' וקורא הוא לכל אחד מבני ישראל בשם אחים ורעים, ואפילו זה שאינו זוכה לתואר הנ"ל הרי נכנס הוא בסוג השני דמתנות לאביונים, אביון מלשון התאב לכל דבר.
ויהי רצון אשר בשמחה ובטוב לבב יוסיף בעניני תורה ומצוה, ומהם הוספה בקביעות עתים בלימוד תורת החסידות והוספה בעניני צדקה, והרי אתמול נכנסנו ביום שהבטיחו רז"ל כל המוסיף מוסיפין לו.

... It is clear that selling now the shares of the stock he has, when such a sale would involve a loss, is entirely inappropriate. And the merit of his commitment to the Lubavitch institutions—which was reported to me by the travelers—will surely stand by him in the assurance of 'Aser Bishvil Shetitasher' (Tithe so that you will become wealthy) in its literal sense; that is, for an increase in livelihood. From this it is understood that he should delay selling the shares until such time as there will be profit in this sale.
And we are approaching the days of the month of mercy and joy, and it is known that Elul is an acronym for 'Ish L'Re'eihu U'Matanos LaEvyonim' (a person to his friend and gifts to the poor), and our Sages taught: 'Ish' refers to the Holy One Blessed Be He—as it says: 'Hashem Ish Milchamah...'—and He calls each one of Bnei Yisrael by the name brothers and friends. And even one who does not merit this title enters into the second category—gifts to the poor; 'Evyon' meaning one who desires everything.
May it be G‑d's will that with joy and gladness of heart he increases in matters of Torah and mitzvahs—including adding fixed times for learning Chassidus and increasing in matters of tzedakah—and yesterday we entered into a day about which our Sages assured: whoever adds, they add for him.
