Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 29th of Sivan, in which you write about the yeshivah where you study and that every Shabbat one of the Chabad chassidim comes there and teaches a Tanya class, and you are unsure whether to join in studying Tanya. You also consider perhaps starting this when you reach about forty years old, etc., etc.
This highlights how great is the concealment and obscurity of our exile in Ikvesa D'Meshicha (the footsteps of Mashiach), that even after what is brought in many places (in the introduction of Rav Chaim Vital to Shaar HaHakdamot, in Iggeret HaKodesh by our master the Baal HaTanya and Shulchan Aruch, in Kuntres Etz Chaim by Admor Maharashab, and others) regarding the necessity of studying the inner dimension of Torah in our generations—still people remain doubtful about this to the extent that they consider starting such study only upon reaching forty years old!
The question becomes even stronger based on practical experience: To stand against unusual winds that unfortunately blow frequently in the street today requires special strength—not just what was sufficient for previous generations. As our Sages said: "Rav found a breach and fenced it," and as with physical illness—when a new illness arises, G‑d forbid, one does not rely on old remedies; so too with spiritual illness. In Ikvesa D'Meshicha when brazenness increases, etc., etc., it is impossible to suffice with only studying the revealed part of Torah—even if one adds study of mussar. It is essential to learn the inner dimension of Torah which, in our generation, has been revealed for understanding and comprehension only through Chabad teachings—as is evident.
Even a brief reflection on Rav Chaim Vital's words in his introduction to Shaar HaHakdamot regarding Ikvesa D'Meshicha, or a brief reflection on Kuntres Etz Chaim mentioned above, will lead any upright person whose will does not override his intellect to immediately begin and persist in this study. The earlier one starts and the more one increases in this—the more praiseworthy it is.
May it be G‑d's will that a spirit from Above be bestowed upon you so you set fixed times for this study—a commitment not only in time but also with your soul—and within a short period you will see its goodness: true goodness as our Sages said—good for Heaven and good for people.
Blessings for good news,
In the name of the Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that studying Tanya and Chassidus should begin without delay; waiting until later in life is unnecessary. In today's challenging times, learning the inner dimension of Torah provides vital spiritual strength for every Jew.
