Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 28th to Matmonim [1]. At an auspicious time, you and your wife will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, of blessed memory, for the matters about which you write.
Regarding what you wrote about a dulled heart, etc., it is known that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, said that refraining from lashon hara (negative speech) applies not only to speaking about others but also about oneself. Just as it is necessary in serving Hashem not to minimize one's shortcomings, so too must one recognize their own strengths. It is evident that one of the tactics of the yetzer hara is to cast sadness and a sense of despair upon a person serving his Creator by saying: Who are you and what good will your efforts do? There is no need to elaborate on this obvious point—especially as we approach receiving the Torah.
Even though now we require preparatory work during Sefiras HaOmer—which is human effort to refine one's character traits through drawing down the omer and beyond—these days also have a special segulah from above. This is because they are drawn from Pesach when Melech HaMoshiach Himself revealed Himself and transferred them from one extreme to another—from the depths of forty-nine gates of impurity [2] to the heights of forty-nine gates of holiness until reaching the fiftieth gate at Matan Torah. See also Zohar Chadash beginning of Yisro—Rashbi's answer to Rabbi Yissa Zeira from among the chaverim—and its conclusion: "Every day he brings out for us..."; see also Tikunei Zohar Tikkun 32.
May it be G‑d's will that you share good news regarding improved health in its literal sense and meaning, as well as increased spreading of Judaism and Chassidus wherever your influence reaches—and always in an increasing manner.
Blessings in the wording used by my father-in-law, the Rebbe: for receiving the Torah with joy and inwardness.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that recognizing our own strengths is as important as acknowledging our flaws. We must reject despair and negative self-talk, especially during times of spiritual preparation like Sefiras HaOmer, trusting in both our efforts and Divine assistance.
