Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to receive your letter from Rosh Chodesh Shevat and the previous one, in which you write about the fixed study of Chassidus you have with two Avrechim. Certainly, you do not allow the sessions to devolve into debates and arguments that, for the most part, only serve to awaken competitiveness; rather, you should explain the matters as they truly are—calmly and pleasantly—without showing any desire for victory. Then it will be like "as water reflects a face..." (meaning: even if at first the listener feels inclined to argue otherwise, this desire weakens over time until it disappears entirely and he recognizes the truth). As has been discussed many times at farbrengens: when one wishes to influence a fellow Jew in matters of Torah and Judaism, he finds great assistance from the inner soul of the person he seeks to influence—which has always been faithful to G‑d—as explained at length in Tanya. Only the "leaven in the dough" delays and conceals this from being revealed outwardly in action or speech but still acts internally. This is clear.

Regarding what you wrote about your own weakened feeling—even though you wish to taste something in serving G‑d but feel distant from it—the verse already says: "It is not too wondrous... nor is it far..." (meaning: spiritual growth is not out of reach), and all that is required is willpower. One should not expect a change from one extreme to another instantly; rather, the order of holiness is "little by little I will drive them out before you," but every day one must do his work in this area. It is absolutely necessary not to be affected by the enticements of the yetzer hara that claim there is no success in your service, etc., for how could it be that G‑d's word—our Torah in general and especially Chassidus—would not succeed? G‑d forbid.

Certainly you will not be satisfied with just these two Avrechim mentioned above; strive to spread the wellsprings more and more, for this is both demanded by our times and an absolute necessity. One proof of this is that suddenly there are opponents—specifically those about whom our Sages said even their shadow's shadow exists—who want (G‑d forbid) to delay redemption and the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu and increase the exile of the Shechinah by confusing minds so people do not engage properly in spreading Chassidus. Even those who recognize its necessity may become distracted by debates or arguments or any involvement with an opponent. Are these last moments before Moshiach's arrival really worth wasting on arguments refuting nonsense when they could be used for spreading Chassidus? This is clear.

With blessing,

In the name of His Honor, my revered teacher and master shlita

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that true influence comes through calm sincerity rather than argumentation. Personal spiritual growth happens gradually with consistent effort; distractions must be avoided so we can focus on spreading Chassidus—especially during these critical times before Moshiach.
