Shalom u'Vrachah!
I am pleased to receive updates from time to time about your wellbeing, and may the blessed Hashem help that your greetings should be good not only spiritually but also physically, for with a Jew both aspects go together. As is known from the Rambam's statement: "Maintaining a healthy and whole body is part of the ways of Hashem," and also from the Baal Shem Tov's teaching on the verse "Ki Tireh Chamor... Azov Ta'azov Imo" (If you see a donkey... you shall surely help with him), that one must serve Hashem not through fasts and self-affliction but together with the body—"Bechol Derachecha Da'eihu" (In all your ways know Him). If this is always required, it is even more so in our times when there are relatively few workers for Torah and mitzvos matters. Therefore, every worker in this field is very precious—many times over—and every good deed is more valuable. It is evident that when the body is weakened, there is also a lack in the soul's activities which come through the body, as explained in Tanya chapter 37; see there.
Actually, I thought that for you there would be no need to elaborate on this matter. However, I have heard reports that you do not pay attention to bodily health as required according to what was said above. The verse clearly states: "Venishmartem Meod Lenafshoseichem" (You shall greatly guard your souls). I am sure that this lack of attention comes with good intentions. But as mentioned above, each of us in this time is a soldier who must obey orders and instructions. Since we have been told that in Ikvesa d'Meshicha (the footsteps of Mashiach) the main service is charity and action (see Iggeres HaKodesh by Rabbeinu HaZaken at the end of section 9), one must do everything dependent on oneself to have strength to do even more in these matters.
Therefore, it is well known—the instruction given many times which we heard from my revered father-in-law, our Rebbe and leader—to taste food before davening; and for some people not just any taste but specifically foods made from grains so as to feel stronger. Furthermore, then one can daven with greater devotion. Certainly you know about the famous letter from the Baal Shem Tov to his student Rabbi Yaakov Yosef of Polnoye which rejects increasing fasts; see there (printed in HaTamin vol. 1, Sefer Ginzai Nistaros part 1 section 68 and elsewhere).
I thank you in advance for writing me that at least from now on your conduct will follow my revered father-in-law's instruction—to safeguard bodily health—which will bring about health of soul and its service. Replace fasting with charity or fasting from speech etc. (see Toldos Moharash p.72). Also continue working for the holy institutions and especially Kollel Chabad—but not overstraining your body—which itself benefits your service since then you have more strength to accomplish.
I strongly hope that with such conduct you will soon see increased success and be able to report many more years of achievements in holiness.
Enclosed here are recent publications which will surely enable you to benefit others as well.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that caring for one's physical health is essential for effective Divine service—body and soul work together. By maintaining health according to chassidic guidance, one increases their ability to fulfill mitzvos and positively impact others.
