במענה על מכתבו, נעם לי להוודע ממנו, שבהשיעורים בבית הכנסת הי' ג"כ לימוד הלכות שבת, אבל כנראה ממכתבו זהו בעבר ואין שיעור זה קיים עתה; ועוד זאת אף שידוע הכרח הלימוד דהלכות שבת, וכמו שהפליג בזה באגה"ק לרבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשו"ע (עיין שם קונטרס אחרון, קסג, ע"א), אבל מובן ג"כ שמוכרחת הידיעה בהלכות דימות החול וכמו הלכות ברכות, הנחת תפילין, תפלה, ברכת הנהנין וכו', אשר העדר הידיעה בהם מבהיל, ולא עוד אלא שמועטים המשימים לב ללימוד זה מפני שלבם חפץ דוקא בפלפולא דאורייתא וכו', וד"ל. ולכן תקותי שישתדל לתקן הדבר, וזכות הרבים תלוי בו, ולהעיר ג"כ מהלכות תלמוד תורה לרבנו הזקן פ"ב סעיף טי"ת, ובהקדמת בניו בהדפסתם השו"ע שלו.
ולקראת חג השבועות הבע"ל, הנה יה"ר, וכפתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, שנזכה לקבלת התורה בשמחה ובפנימית.

In response to your letter, I was pleased to learn from you that in the synagogue classes there was also study of Hilchos Shabbos. However, it seems from your letter that this was in the past and that this class no longer exists; furthermore, even though the necessity of learning Hilchos Shabbos is well known—as our master, the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch, greatly emphasized this in Iggeres HaKodesh (see there Kuntres Acharon, 163a)—it is also understood that knowledge of weekday laws is essential as well, such as the laws of berachos, putting on tefillin, prayer, blessings over enjoyment, etc. The lack of knowledge in these areas is alarming. Moreover, few pay attention to studying these because their hearts desire specifically pilpul d'Oraisa (analytical Torah study), etc., and this should be understood.
Therefore, I hope you will strive to correct this matter; the merit of the community depends on you. Also note from Hilchos Talmud Torah by the Alter Rebbe chapter 2 section 9, and in his sons' introduction to their printing of his Shulchan Aruch.
As we approach Shavuos may it be His will—and as my revered father-in-law said—that we merit receiving the Torah with joy and inwardness.
