Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the end of Adar and the one before it. Thank you for your good news regarding your improved health. May it continue to improve, as our holy Torah rules: "one ascends in holiness." Certainly, in addition to increasing your study of Chassidus, you are also increasing your activities within Tzeirei Agudas Chabad. Through this, you also increase the blessing of Hashem and success in all that is needed.
Regarding what you wrote about how to affix a mezuzah on a balcony: In general, concerning mezuzah placement, there is an instruction from our Rebbeim that one follows the direction of the door hinge (heker tzir), according to some early authorities. They add that they were asked: What should be done if all the doors in a room have their hinges facing another room? How then can one enter the room? They answered: Enter through the window. However, this applies only to doors leading to a courtyard or public domain. It is worthwhile to clarify details with the elder Anash in your area; surely they are also familiar with this matter.
Regarding what you wrote about Nittel night—whether to fulfill the mitzvah of marital relations then when permitted before midnight: Be aware that (a) On a night of immersion (mikveh), as stated in Mishnas Chassidim (tractate Seder Leil Pesach at its end), there is no prohibition except on Tisha B'Av and Yom Kippur nights. (b) Regarding before midnight—it is brought in several places that it is always preferable for fulfilling this mitzvah after midnight; see Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim siman 240 se'if 7 and its commentaries. (c) Regarding Nittel night—even though Sefer Darkei Chaim v'Shalom siman 965 cites Sefer Zecher Tzaddik Livracha in the name of Harav Hatzaddik from Munkatch who was stringent about this matter, I have not heard any directive about it. The basis for being stringent after midnight requires further investigation. I do not have Sefer Zecher Tzaddik Livracha at hand to examine his reasons. However, since fulfilling this mitzvah involves sanctifying thought—and thought is especially influential—there is reason to be concerned that thoughts of Nittel may arise during the act, which would be a deficiency even if one thinks only to reject it. Perhaps this too is a reason for stringency.
As requested, I will mention you and your wife at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal nishmaso Eden for fulfillment of your heart's desires for good soon.
With holiday blessings.
Due to the sanctity of the festival, the Rebbe did not sign personally; I am signing on his behalf.
