To our brothers Bnei Yisrael, and especially those involved in education, everywhere—may Hashem be upon them for life.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

Pesach, the first Yom Tov given to us—both for all of Israel collectively and for every Jew individually—is especially connected with the concept of education. For the Jewish people as a whole, the Exodus from Egypt was their birth as a nation and the beginning of preparation for receiving the Torah. The Torah is essentially instruction—a guide and education in a way of life. For each individual Jew, the Torah specifically emphasizes: VeHigadeta LeVincha ("And you shall tell your child"), the education of children, which is one of the main points of Pesach. Therefore, Pesach is an appropriate time to reflect on educational systems and methods and how they are implemented in practice—especially regarding Yomim Tovim.

Yomim Tovim—and Pesach in particular—are associated with many laws and customs whose influence should extend into daily life throughout the year. As important as this is for every Jew, it is even more crucial for youth and especially children.

In practice, however, due to various reasons, instead of these days strengthening the influence on children and students—boys and girls—they are actually freed from the influence of yeshiva or cheder not only on Yom Tov itself but also for some time before it.

In the old country, releasing students during Bein Hazmanim did not harm their education because both the street—and certainly the home—provided a living, warm atmosphere of Judaism and mitzvah observance in daily life to its fullest extent; educational institutions mainly provided knowledge in Torah. In our times—especially in this country—the role of educational institutions is not only to enrich students' knowledge in Torah and Judaism but primarily to instill yiras Shamayim (fear of Heaven), meticulous mitzvah observance, and a Jewish way of life overall.

Therefore, removing students from the influence of educational institutions during Bein Hazmanim—and especially on Yom Tov—deprives them of a vital influence precisely at a time when they need it most.

I therefore turn to everyone involved or able to be involved in kosher education—and to parents generally—to correct this regrettable situation through appropriate means. Most importantly: (a) Arrange that on Erev Yom Tov or at least immediately before Yom Tov children should again receive necessary instructions and guidance about the laws and customs relevant to that Yom Tov as well as its content and significance; (b) Arrange—as absolutely necessary—that even during Yom Tov itself (at least on Chol HaMoed), educators should gather with children appropriately to utilize these auspicious days to strengthen their influence on all matters connected with Yom Tov generally and practically; (c) Parents should not rely entirely on educational institutions but also take care themselves—on one hand recognizing that street influence can be harmful while on the other hand realizing that children have more free time during Yom Tov and Bein Hazmanim—which increases both parental responsibility for their children's spiritual welfare as well as their opportunities to positively influence them.

May Hashem help that all sons and daughters—all types of children enumerated in the Haggadah—be gathered together at one table with the goal of fulfilling "the testimonies, statutes, and laws which Hashem our G‑d commanded us," so they all become good questioners who ask in order to know and follow Torah's true answers. And may the beginning of Kibbutz Galuyos—the gathering together even those lost children into a Torah setting—also hasten the start of redemption and complete true Geulah through Moshiach Tzidkeinu when we will fulfill our wish at Seder's start: "Now we are slaves; next year may we be free."

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that Pesach highlights our responsibility in Jewish education. He warns against excessive free time for children during holidays and urges both educators and parents to provide ongoing guidance so youth remain connected to Torah values year-round.
