Fasting, the Animal Soul, and True Chassidic Self-Refinement

The Rebbe writes that instead of fasting and weakening the body, one should focus on refining the animal soul by restraining desires and speech. This approach aligns with chassidic teachings and preserves health, enabling better Torah study and mitzvah observance.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I was pleased to receive your letter in which you write about the wedding arrangements at a good and auspicious time, as well as some details of your current preparations. I am interested to know in detail how you are managing for the upcoming Pesach holiday, and I trust you will also inform me about this.

Regarding what you wrote about your conduct: I do not approve at all of your practice of fasting (until midday) on Mondays and Thursdays, etc., because this is not the chassidic way. Instead of afflicting the body, one should afflict the animal soul. This means not harming bodily health by withholding necessary food and drink but rather replacing this with affliction of the animal soul—namely, by refraining from fulfilling desires in eating and drinking, avoiding idle talk and certainly refraining from any speech resembling lashon hara or any forbidden speech. One should fulfill the mitzvah of 'Ve'ahavta l'rei'acha kamocha' (Love your fellow as yourself), even regarding someone who seems not to act lovingly toward you or has even harmed you or offended your honor, etc., etc. Sometimes these behaviors are harder to implement than fasting from food and drink. Furthermore, they do not weaken one's health; thus one can learn Torah lessons and perform mitzvos with excellence without being disturbed by bodily matters.

With blessings for good news in all the above matters as well as for good tidings regarding your wife's efforts in strengthening Judaism for yourselves and your surroundings—and for a kosher and joyous Pesach holiday.

With holiday blessings.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that true self-refinement comes from working on one's animal soul—controlling desires and speech—rather than through physical deprivation like fasting. This approach preserves health while deepening spiritual growth.
