On Torah-Observant Jews Joining Reform and Conservative Rabbinic Bodies

The Rebbe addresses whether Torah-observant Jews may join rabbinic organizations that include Reform or Conservative representatives. He explains this is not just about organizational participation, but a fundamental issue affecting the Jewish public’s relationship to core Torah principles.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your question regarding my opinion on the issue that has recently come up among the rabbis in the United States—namely: whether it is permissible for Torah- and mitzvah-observant Jews to participate in organizations which also include rabbis who represent the Reform or Conservative movements (either as individuals, such as in the New York Board of Rabbis and similar bodies, or as organizations, such as the Synagogue Council). The reasons for and against have been publicized by them on various occasions and printed in newspapers.

In response: In recent weeks, this question has intensified and taken on new dimensions because the broader public—especially younger rabbis and Jewish youth throughout America—have begun to pay special attention to it. Their perspective is that resolving this question and issuing a ruling is not just about participation in a particular organization; rather, it is a ruling about our attitude toward the Reform and Conservative movements in general. That is: Are these rabbis merely 'lenient rabbis,' as opposed to Orthodox rabbis who are 'stringent,' or does the law follow what Rambam writes (Hilchos Teshuvah 3:8): "One who says that the Torah is not from G‑d—even one verse or even one word—if he says Moshe said it on his own accord, he is a denier of the Torah; likewise one who denies its interpretation, which is Torah Sheb'al Peh (the Oral Law), even a detail, etc."

Based on this, it is understood that anyone who can influence matters—especially those involved in issuing rulings and formulating decisions—must clearly recognize the situation and its consequences. This is a matter affecting thousands upon thousands of Jews’ relationship to fundamental tenets of faith. The supposed benefits some write or speak about are irrelevant when it comes to an issue of this nature.

Let it be known: Those who wish to leave room for doubt—or at least oppose without sufficient force—by claiming they are not addressing the core issue of attitude toward Conservative or Reform movements should know that this makes no difference regarding the ruling itself or its most definitive formulation. The wider public—and certain rabbis—will not be interested in arguments or explanations; they will simply ask for a clear decision: approval or absolute rejection.

May it be G‑d’s will that, fitting for our times—the era of redemption—many will be clarified, refined, and purified: to distinguish between the Torah of the living G‑d and human contrivances.

With blessing,
M. Schneersohn

Summary

The Rebbe writes that participation by Torah-observant Jews in rabbinic bodies with Reform or Conservative representatives raises fundamental issues about faith and cannot be justified by perceived benefits; clarity and firm rejection are required.
