במענה על מכתבו מיו"ד כסלו, בו כותב שאלותיו בהנוגע לעניני עבודתו וכן בהנוגע לענין המקוה ב...
ולא באתי אלא להערה והארה, אף שחשבתי שלמותר הוא בהנוגע לאברך שהי' כמה שנים בכותלי תו"ת, והוא:
ידוע פתגם רבנו הזקן בעל התניא - פוסק בנסתר דתורה - והשו"ע - פוסק בנגלה דתורה - אשר ואהבת את ה' אלקיך, ואהבת לרעך כמוך, חד הוא, וע"פ המבואר בתניא פרק ד' אשר האהבה היא שרש כל רמ"ח מ"ע וממנה הן נמשכות ובלעדה אין להם קיום אמיתי (שגם מצות היראה בכלל רמ"ח מ"ע).
מובן שאהבת ד' היא היסוד והשרש לכל התורה ומצותי', ומזה מוכרח הי' שכיון שהשגחה העליונה הביאתו ל... ע"י סיבות שונות שלמעלה מן הטבע, ומצא שם בקעה בהנוגע להמקוה, צריך הי' להניח כל חשבונות עצמו ואת עצמו להצד, לכה"פ למשך זמן קצר, ולגדור גדר בבקעה זו, ותמורת זה ולמרות היותו שם כמה חדשים, כנראה שלא עשה כלום בזה, וכנראה שגם עתה לא הי' רואה ענין לעצמו לעשות בזה כלום, אלא כיון שנמצאים אנו בעקבתא דמשיחא אשר על תקופה זו נאמר יתבררו ויתלבנו ויצרפו רבים, הראו לו בהשגחה פרטית באופן הנראה גם לעיני בשר שהענין נוגע לו לעצמו ובפשטות כפשוטו בהנוגע לפרנסה גשמית וחומרית, ואז נתעורר ושלח מכתב מהיר בשאלה, היתכן?
תקותי ששורותי אלה המעטות בכמות תספיקנה לעורר בתוכו את מה שהחדירו לפנימיות נפשו בכותלי תו"ת ותביאנה למעשה בפועל שיתחיל למלאות תפקידו האמור במשנה, אני נבראתי לשמש את קוני, וכמבואר ברמב"ם הלכות תשובה פרק יו"ד.

Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 10th of Kislev, in which you write your questions regarding your work as well as concerning the matter of the mikveh in [location]. I am writing only as a note and illumination, even though I thought it would be unnecessary for an Avrech who spent several years within the walls of Tomchei Temimim. It is as follows:
It is known the saying of our master, the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya—the posek in the hidden aspects of Torah—and the Shulchan Aruch—the posek in the revealed aspects of Torah—that 'Ve'ahavta es Hashem Elokecha (You shall love Hashem your G‑d), and Ve'ahavta l'reiacha kamocha (You shall love your fellow as yourself) are one.' As explained in Tanya chapter 4, love is the root of all 248 positive commandments and from it they all extend; without it they have no true existence (even mitzvos related to awe are included among the positive commandments). It is understood that love of G‑d is the foundation and root of all Torah and its mitzvos.
From this it should have been obvious that since Divine Providence brought you to [location] through various supernatural causes, and you found there an opportunity regarding the mikveh, you should have set aside all personal considerations and yourself—at least for a short time—and established a safeguard in this area. Instead, despite being there for several months, it seems you did nothing about this; apparently even now you do not see any reason to act on this matter. Only because we are now in Ikvesa d'Meshicha (the footsteps before Moshiach), about which it is said 'many will be clarified, whitened, and refined,' was it shown to you through clear Divine Providence—even visible to physical eyes—that this matter concerns you personally and quite simply affects your material livelihood. Then you were aroused and sent a quick letter with a question—how can this be?
I hope that these few lines will suffice to awaken within you what was instilled deep within your soul during your years at Tomchei Temimim, and will bring you to actual deed—to begin fulfilling your stated mission in Mishnah: 'I was created to serve my Creator,' as explained in Rambam Hilchos Teshuvah chapter 10.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true Ahavas Yisrael means setting aside personal interests for communal needs. A Tomchei Temimim graduate must act selflessly when Divine Providence presents an opportunity—fulfilling his purpose by serving others with dedication.
