Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 22nd of MarCheshvan with its enclosure, I have long awaited news from London about what has happened after the return of the guests who visited here in the seventh month, which is blessed with all good so as to draw it down for the entire year.
It has already been discussed at several farbrengens that the concept of "divrei betailim" (idle words) is not just as commonly understood—speaking about trivial matters—but also in its deeper sense: if words do not accomplish their intended effect and reach the goal of speech, they become idle words. It is well known in Chassidus that even discourses of Chassidus—and certainly words of inspiration at a farbrengen—their ultimate purpose is preparation for action. In our times, this preparation means practical action in daily life and even outside one's immediate circle. If this is lacking, then even words of inspiration become as described above.
Regarding what you write about the reasons why the farbrengen was not so successful, there is room to say that among these reasons is also what follows: It is explained in one of the talks of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that there was a difference between earlier sages who remained in their places and waited for people to come hear their Torah and innovations, versus what was innovated by the Baal Shem Tov—he would go around to towns and villages and bring them the word of G‑d and His Torah. Since you are apparently in a place where people are wary or fearful of Chassidic teachings—as my father-in-law explains in his aforementioned talk—it is not enough to hold farbrengens where Anash are invited to come; rather Anash must go out to them—to places where they gather.
May it be G‑d's will that this will be only for a short period and soon they will see "the light that it is good," and since one takes the source of light with him, they will then run toward Torah and mitzvah.
I am enclosing something recently published; surely you will share its content with many, for the merit of many depends on you. The pidyon nefesh enclosed in your letter will be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place (tziyun) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal.
Blessings for spreading the wellsprings outward and success in all three aspects of "Yafutzu": spreading (meaning expansion in length, breadth, and depth), wellsprings (connected with a source—living waters), outward (so that even outside reaches these wellsprings). It is already known that because of the self-sacrifice (of Rabbeinu HaZaken) for Chassidus, it was decreed by the Heavenly Court that in every matter of Torah, fear of Heaven, and good character traits—the hand of his followers would prevail.
Blessings for a joyous Festival of Redemption awaiting good news.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true impact comes when words lead to real change; outreach must be proactive—even going out to those hesitant about Chassidus. Spreading wellsprings outward brings blessing both personally and communally.
