Rejecting Despair Even When Self-Criticism Feels Justified

The Rebbe writes that even if one's negative self-assessment were entirely accurate, feelings of despair and despondency are completely rejected. Instead, one should use such feelings to inspire positive action, seek Divine assistance, and help others draw closer to Torah.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

Your letter from the end of Tishrei arrived in due time.

Even if we assume that you are correct in all the matters you write about and in your explanations, the outcome and conclusion of your letter—namely, a feeling of low spirits and despair—is entirely rejected and unfounded.

Especially since what you wrote is not even correct, as explained elsewhere: the truth would be as you say only if there were a single soul praying, etc. See also Iggeres HaKodesh at the end of section 25, Torah Or on "Shir HaMa'alos," and in many places. Based on all this, it is clear that on the contrary—the matters and state of mind you describe can actually arouse great and powerful inspiration. Of course, this too requires special help from Heaven—even more than other matters.

The advice for this is to give tzedakah to others—that is, to bring them closer to Torah and its mitzvos and to the inner dimension of Torah. Then he too will be drawn closer from Above. Debating or being confused about this is not just a waste of time without benefit; on the contrary—it is actually harmful.

He should force himself to keep the yeshivah schedule and influence all his friends in this as well—through his words but even more by being a living example of how a Tamim should behave—and he should strengthen himself further in bringing others close.

When the yetzer hara comes again with suggestions to get involved in debates or doubts about good deeds, he should not enter into any of this. He should explain to it that he is a servant—even an eved Canaani (G‑d forbid), who by nature prefers lawlessness—still has no free moment for his own matters except for serving his master. He is not allowed to waste time even for debates related to his service of his master.

Regarding your question about how to arrange your studies and their times—you are in Tomchei Temimim yeshivah. This must be not only physically but also spiritually; meaning simply that one must follow and act as directed by the mashpia and ram (teacher) of the yeshivah.

Blessings for good news in all mentioned above. It is already known from our Sages: "Whatever is more straightforward is better."

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that despair has no place—even if self-criticism seems justified. Instead, channel such feelings into positive action by helping others and following guidance with steadfastness; clarity and blessing come through straightforward commitment.
